Hi,

Does anyone know how can I learn to become a jewellery valuer ?

I have this uncanny ability to detect the smallest of flaws in every object and thought 'Wow, I can probably be a great valuer' :)

Btw, I'm based in Australia.

I'm no expert but As far as I am aware you would probably need to start with some kind of gemologist training with a reputable association like the GIA.
Then you would have to get your appraisal certificate. I'm pretty sure it takes years of experience maybe starting of in jewelry retail?

I think its one of those careers that you will constantly have to learn and be on the ball.

Its not something you can learn over night thats for sure.

Yes,as Elvawith says,it takes years.I got my FGA,DGA and then needed 5 years trade experience before I could even think about going for it.In the end my diamond and gem qualifications gave me enough of a springboard to work from, and as I worked in retail and loved it,I did'nt want to become purely a valuer.I still did valuations, but my other stuff covered me to make an appraisal on a legal document in case it was ever contested in court etc.So I never did it.
Being in the trade though,I did see some fascinating stuff,I did'nt have to be strictly a valuer to still be able to admire some truly gorgeous stuff that came in!!

I think that sounds like a wonderful career to choose, but I have no idea how one goes about pursuing it.

It's ironic you brought this up, b/c for about a year now, I've been thinking that I should have been in the jewelery business. I can't believe I never thought of it back in my younger days when I could have made a go of it.
