I was brought a Ted Baker bobble top patent blue purse for Christmas 2yrs ago.
It's my every day purse and I love it.
I noticed yesterday that the material was beginning to break away along the stitching on the flap.
Realistically how long should a purse stay in good condition?

Well, it so depends on so many things; material, craftsmanship, care, use...TB is high street and a couple of years is well done for a bag of that price range, I think. For another brand or bag 2 or even 5 yrs is a disgrace. You can't expect the same from TB and say, Chanel.
I purchased a preloved LC Penelope recently, the style is 3 yrs old so the bag is max. that age and LC took it in for free repair as the inking has split. It should last longer. And we're talking of a ~700€ bag from a contemporary heritage brand.
For high end designer bags the assumption of quality and durability are much higher and the brand will usually take care of any problems.

Depends on how much you use it and what the material is. Most of TBs bags are under $200. Are you sure it’s patent leather and not a PVC bag? There’s a great difference in quality and TB has quite a lot of PVC/vinyl bags. I find the $200-500 range where you get the best bang for your buck as far as quality v. Price. I just bought a non-leather TB tote for just about $100 at the beginning of the pandemic so I haven’t used it yet. But I bought it for the purpose of bringing all my gym stuff to work, etc. I like the bright cheerful flower pattern.

I think this is exactly it. I've had quite a few Ted Baker bags over the years. It's also a little hit and miss even with the same materials. From my experience, the bags I had with laminated leather or PVC/vinyl have shown cracking. On the other hand, I've had this soft Silver purse and this patterned crossbody and they have minimal, if any, signs of wear.
