Home & Garden How far in advance do you decorate for each holiday?

I'm very jealous of you ladies. I always have the best intentions but when the holidays come, all I can muster is a little wool felt Christmas tree on my credenza. I did get little LED lights for it last year!

My mother's tree is a production: she buys one in early December; my brother wraps light around every branch (no one else is allowed to do it as apparently we mess it up); then the decorations, collected over years many of which are handmade mouth blown glass ornaments, go up. Unfortunately my parents are the ones who take it down after New Years and it's getting to be too much for them.

I try and do Halloween & fall decor in late September. As soon as Halloween is over, it's down and I'm into full on fall/harvest decor.

I put my dining room Christmas tree (fake) up in November before Thanksgiving. (I like the holiday spirit without all the gift pressure. ;) )

We try and get our family room Christmas tree (real) the first weekend in December and that's when we decorate the rest of the house as well.

Since I have 4 little ones, I also decorate for Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter and Independence Day. Those I tend to do 2-3 weeks prior.

After several years in deep hiatus, I'm excited to have a big leap ahead of holiday decorating. Here's what I have after 2 days of hard work ... up since yesterday.

Christmas decorations are being displayed from the last weekend in Nov onwards.
In our tradition the tree (a real one) is being put up and decorated in the evening of Dec 23 (when the children are asleep). The living room is locked afterwards to ensure the kids do not catch a glimpse of the tree during the day of Dec 24. In the afternoon of Dec 24 the family goes to church. Back home - it is dark outside by then - one of the grown-ups lights the candles (usually real ones) on the tree and rings a little bell (i.e. means the "Christkind" has arrived with gifts), the kids rush into the room (alas, they missed the "Christkind" who is rather busy this particular evening...) and marvel at the traditionally decorated tree in the otherwise dark room. Then - torture since they want to open their gifts! - the smaller kids recite "Christmassy" poems and the older kids play Christmas chorals on their instruments with everyone singing along. Then - FINALLY - the gifts can be opened...

My family has followed this tradition for about 300 years, and I hope my son will carry on with it one day when he has his own family.
