How easy is it to buy a non-quota bag as a first time walk-in?

Hi everyone,

I have heard a lot about the infamous quota system when it comes to Birkin, Kelly and sometimes Constance. But how is it if you walk in the first time and want to buy a non-quota bag? Do you still have to build up a purchase history with smaller items in order to buy one?

I'm thinking of things like the Kelly Depeche briefcase for example. Would there be any problem with asking for one directly on first try?

When I went in August, I asked about a Lindy which was not on display, and was offered a bunch of colors they had in stock, and opted it wasn’t for me after looking at a gorgeous Vert Bosphore GHW. Still kind of kicking myself for passing, it’s such a gorgeous colorway.

Then I asked to see a Halzan which was on display, and after looking at the color from the display to confirm if I was more interested and not make him go back to the stockroom for nothing, the SA went through the other available colors with me and I got to choose from them which to see. I took a Bleu Nuit, GHW home with me!

it seems anything on display should be available, and it doesn’t hurt to ask about things that aren’t.

For sure. The very first time I went into a Hermès store, I asked for a Bolide and the SA asked if I preferred gold or silver hardware as they had both in stock (and not on display). As a first time customer, SA definitely seemed to want that I pick the hardware as I got the feeling SA did not want to unwrap both. After many visits and purchases since, I think SA would let me see both now!

The Kelly Depeche I’ve seen on the website. In terms of it being readily available, I don’t think it should be a hard to get bag in the boutique and you can usually have an SA order in store too if you wanted to build that relationship and give them commission. I assume since it’s on the website it’s not considered a quota bag.

I shop with a smaller boutique in NorCal tho and I feel like even some non-quota bags are hard to get readily like the Mini Lindy or Picotin 18. I’m also a guy though and my SA says things like “oh those are too small for men” and I also assume these hard to get non-quota bags, my SA makes it seem like the stores just get sent these at random. ‍♂️ But otherwise good luck! I hope the Kelly Depeche will be readily available for u to pickup (or order through an SA).

I went to the boutique last week when i was looking for a Verrou or Roulis, unfortunately the roulis was out but the verrou is available, they pulled it out from the back rather quick

i think hope the bag that you are looking for is available for you !!
