How does a SO works?

basically an SA has to offer it to you (so you must have a good relationship with an SA). after that, they will let you pick the leather, color, stitching, etc. and then you have to wait, wait depends on the bag you chose.

Thank you gymangel812, I know the basic procedure, I'd like more elaborate information about how it works in terms of which kind of SO's they might accept, which ones are more probably refused, etc. I do have an excellent relationship with my SA but I've got a meeting with the SM and would like to be more confident about what to wait.

I remember some threads where there were comments about the difference between PO's and SO's but can't find them, does anybody else remember them?

A PO (podium order) is basically reserving a bag that will be produced by Hermes in the upcoming season. Your SA can ask what you want from podium so the manager can make sure to order it; this allows you to get by PO a rested color - Hermes just won't produce large amounts of this color. These are usually regular bags (i.e. no contrast lining).

An Hermes RAC order is what we call an SO (special order). This is where you can pick your color, lining, stitching, hardware, monogram, etc... There is a chart of what colors are available in specific leathers and what threads are available for stitching for your reference. There is also a leather book that you can look through. You then fill out a form with all the options with your choices.

In my experience, you can't get a rested color in a bag even by SO. If they are not making bags in that color, you can't get it. I have been waiting for some time for a color to become available for SO again. It is only available in SLGs.

SOs aren't what they used to be. There are now limits (at least for us mortals) in terms of how many colors can be used for a given bag, for example (I have a tri-color Kelly on order, and was not permitted to request a contrasting lining). On the other hand, I'm no VIP, so perhaps for some folks. . . who knows?
