How do you sell what you love?

so, over the past several months I have bought 3 bags that I have been listing over. I love them all. Unfortunately, finances have taken a turn and things are very tight. If I sell these bags, 2 of which are unused, I'll get good money for them and it feels like the right thing to do. On the other hand, I love them and don't want to let go...
Have any of you ever been in the same position? What choices did you make and how?
Thanks in advance for feedback!

I was there...8 years ago...? I don't recall, but I did get rid of a ton of bags for financial reasons. It hurts in the beginning, but ultimately it ended up being just stuff. The money gained was worth it and made me miss the bags less.

I'm no longer in that position anymore and while I can get those bags back, my tastes have changed. I have a different set of bags now but if I were in the same position I was before, I'd sell them all in a heartbeat, no questions or second-guesses. They're not worth keeping if I'm in financial straits.

I'd suggest a couple of things:

1) Think about your priorities. What is most important to you? Having the bags and struggling financially or selling them and having an easier time with your bills.

2) Pretty bags come out every year. You love these but styles and your taste will change. Sell the bags and when you get in a different position you can buy the new bags you love.

3) Celebrate selling your bags and doing the right thing for your finances. Don't look at it as a loss. Look at it as a great thing that you made a smart decision.

And overall, I'd say once you sell the bags, stay off TPB / TPF and focus on growing savings for a while. That way, when you do buy your perfect bags in the future you won't have the likelihood of running into a situation where you have to part with your babies again. You'll have a comfy nest egg to fall back on.

Good luck!!

I agree with everyone but speaking from experience do not sell these bags if you ever plan on buying them again. You lose money in the sale and with price increases you will end up wasting money. With that said, if money is tight then do what you gotta do. I feel for you, I had to do the same at one point but it was definitely the right thing to do.

Thank you all so much for the feedback. Being on tpf doesn't push me to get a bag; I visit different forums. We've just taken a financial hit over the past year and have to tighten the belt quite a bit. We're living paycheck to paycheck right now and starting to dig out. We have a house, cars, jobs, etc so I don't want to paint a bleak picture. It's just that I'm a teacher and the summer is coming up amd the "mad money" that I put away from selling my stuff on eBay has been depleted. I'm left with a decision to make. Do I sell the bags and have breathing room for the summer or have 3 bags that I love in my closet to stare at. If I sell them I have the opportunity to get away for a couple of nights with my husband, to be able to go out with friends and have a life instead of having the money tied up in the closet. I feel bad because one is an LV speedy that I got more than 30 days ago so I can't get money or credit back. I must sound like I'm whining about nothing. I just feel like sharing gives me the opportunity for feedback to help with perspective. Thanks!

Given your comments, I would definitely encourage you to sell them. When circumstances change at some point you can always consider rebuilding a bag collection, or getting one special one. But peace of mind and other more compelling priorities are worth far more than keeping them around.

Can you split the difference? You said you were going to keep 1 and sell 2. Can you keep 2 and sell one?

I'd go for this as well, at least to start. Since you're not in a period of need, sell one, see how long it lasts and how you feel about it?

That said, given that the circumstances aren't dire and you have some time, I'd look at other options, like tutoring or other part time work?

Are you sure you could sell for close to what you are asking? I've read of very slow sales on ebay, etc and low ball offers. I would hate to sell a bag I loved to only get a fraction of what I paid. I agree that perhaps extra jobs, etc might net you more money than selling bags. Unless you could return to the boutique new with tags for a full refund.

it's just a bag. i have no emotional attachment so i just let them go without a care. there are so many other bags out there to buy, and so many new styles yet to come that it shouldn't even matter to let one or two or 20 go... especially if you need the cash back for other, more important life matters
