How do you read a date code?

What I mean is, how do you figure out it makes sense? For instance, 0024 means feb 2004? what about 0204?

Yes, 0024 means Feb-04. 0204 does not mean anything though (it would correspond to 00-24).
The first and third numbers equal month, second and forth make up year. Hence, first number can only ever be zero or one.
