How do you know your watch is authentic?

Since it's hard to get watches authenticated online before purchasing, what would you look for in a watch to ensure it's authenticity?

What are some tip-offs that might signify that a watch is a fake?

These questions apply to before making the purchase and after you have purchased the watch.
