Like, right now, I know I need a bag like a need a hole in my head, but I can't decide if I will keep this bag or not.

How do you decide?

And how do you calm yourself or cheer up yourself if you've decided to let go? :)

I put my stuff in it and walk around the house with it so I can judge comfort, function, ease of use. It it's uncomfortable, not functional or easy to use, I know I won't use it anyway so it's easier to let it go.
If I already have a lot of black bags I have to love it enough to frequently pull it out to use. If it's just going to live in the closet, I return it and make myself feel better by getting something I will reach for often.
Beautiful bag, good luck with your decision!

I fill it up with my things and try it around the house for the day. I usually take it to my closet and hold it up against my clothing too, so that I can see how many outfits it will match. And I look to see if I have something similar already and what condition the other one is in.

I also compare what I have to other things in my closet, and also to what goes with my wardrobe and how often I wear a certain bag (assuming it's not a special occasion purse).

But, if what you are asking is how do I know if I should buy or keep a new bag and get rid of another I have, I look at the bag I am interested in and imagine if it suddenly became unavailable and how that would make me feel, versus how I would feel if the one I already have was no longer there or if I had to choose between the two. If I would be sad, but ultimately fine with the bag I currently have not being in my collection, I know it's probably fine to sell it. If I would be sad if the new bag became unavailable, and nothing else would be an acceptable replacement (including the one in my closet I am thinking of selling) then I know the new bag is the right one to buy and the other is the right one to sell.

I think everyone has a different motivation when it comes to why they buy bags. Why do you usually buy bags? Maybe more than one of these apply and weigh on one another.

If it’s because of emotion (i.e. it was aesthetically very appealing or felt really good to you), then think about how you felt when you bought it and how not having it would make you feel.
If it’s because of practicality (i.e. filling a necessity to carry a laptop comfortably around), then think about where it fits in your wardrobe or if there is something else that you reach for first.
If it’s because of economical reasons (i.e. it was such a good deal), think about how much you bought it for and how much you can sell it for.
If it’s about rarity (i.e. you’ve been searching FOREVER for this), then think about how hard was it to get and how hard would it be to find again.

And then, when you're looking at a new bag, thinking about the reasons you sold a previous one informs you on how this new one might last.

I'm actually new to this bag addiction thing (well, I hope it won't become a full-blown addiction). I have always been a shoe girl. But this year I bought more bags than I usually do - I probably used to buy one a year, just high street ones like Fossil.

So now I am left with some bags I like (like the one in the pictures) but really have no need for as I am always in backpacks or crossbody.

Basically asking one self why is it here? what needs does it fulfill, does it seem like it could be used, i just sold a bag recently that i thought i'd use(er.. yeah like twice) so decided it did not need to be here.

It's very, very easy to get caught up in 'great deals' the latest 'trendy' bag and so forth but if you don't use it then it's a waste of space and money., at least as far as i am concerned...

Update - I returned this bag. I decided that while I like this, there is something else I like more and I'd want to have the funds when it suddenly pops up. Actually, this is very much like what bunnycat said.
I also did the other suggestions, filled it up with stuff I usually bring, walked around with it...decided, well, I like it lol but basically if I was thinking of reasons not to like it, then maybe I don't need it in my life. I got it on sale so there's that. That made it extra difficult.
Anyway, so I called DHL, arranged for pickup, and lo and behold - around 15 mins later, the DHL guy arrived. So no changing minds allowed!
Interestingly enough, once I gave it to DHL, I did not really feel bad or anything and didn't miss it. So I guess I don't love it. And my goal moving forward is to only keep things (and people ;) ) who fill my heart with joy.
