Naturally I have very flat dark blonde hair. For the past year I've been lightening it to a medium-light blonde and loved it. In the winter I tried to go a little darker but my light showed through as my hair faded and my roots came back so about three weeks ago I decided to try again. I brought pictures and asked my hairstylist for a sandy dark blonde and she gave me a chestnut brown with red tints that I didn't notice until a few days later when someone commented on them. It is starting to fade a lot and somehow turning out with an orange tint to it. Now that it's summer I'm rethinking my hair and want to go back to blonde because it suits me better. I don't have the money for a salon plus I no longer trust my usual stylist so I was hoping to use home kits and gradually lighten. Any ideas with how to go about this safely so I don't fry my hair or turn orange?

Not something to try at home. I'm a licensed cosmetologist, I do not recommend lightening dyed brown hair at home.

Well what exactly would you suggest? Assuming I can find some money to go back to the salon or to some new hairstylist, what should I say to actually get the results I want for once?

I would ask for hilites to go back blonde gradually. If the entire base color is too orangey-brassy, the stylist could use a color or a lightener in between your foils.
Also ask the stylist to show you color swatches to make sure you and the stylist are on the same page.
If you were to try lightening colored hair at home, it would not lighten evenly. The natural grown in roots would lighten to a pretty blonde and previously darkened hair would turn very uneven and brassy.

As of right now my roots aren't showing yet but what I had imagined doing was maybe every three weeks or so using a home kit and just going a little bit lighter each time. Starting with a light brown then a dark blonde, and just going up about a shade or so each time until I get my desired color. What kind of results do you think I could get from that?

You could potentially cause a lot of damage and end up with color you dislike even more than what you have now. I would save up and go to a someone who specializes in color correction. Ask around and find a reputable person. Good luck!

I would go to a salon and just keep getting light blond foil highlights....eventually you will have the look you want. I doubt if it could be done all at once. Good luck.

Another thing, if you went to the salon and requested blond and now got orange highlights why can't you go back and ask them to fix it??? If you paid and did not get the color you want they should correct it.

Well It's not exactly orange.. I had an all over color and it was extremely dark at first but as its fading and my blonde is showing through it has a reddish tint to it which to me looks orangey (I'm extremelyyy picky with my hair if you haven't noticed haha). Since it's been nearly a month now I don't really know if there's much I can do about getting the salon to fix it... the owner isn't the most compassionate person. I think I'm going to just wait until I can go to someone really good to fix it.. It's not terrible just not what I want. But thanks everyone for your input I appreciate it you probably saved me from another hair catastrophe
