Travel HONG KONG tip - questions - advice!

the best hotel in hongkong: FOUR SEASONS! it's connected to IFC mall (upscale mall where you can get just about everything, there's a grocery shop and the MRT station on the basement), and close the to hip are (central, lan kwai fong), i usually go there for the shopping and eating, but you can always ask the hotel to arrange a a day trip tour, hong kong is very small, it doesn't take too much time to cruise around the island, you can try take the ferry and go to macau, they just open venetian and wynn hotel there

I was in HK this past January, here is a laundry list of stuff I did. I did stay with friends, so I was involved with daily activities like grocery shopping in addition to tourist stuff:

arrival/departure from Hong Kong: take the metro right into central HK then get your cab to where you are going.

Flower market.
Ladies market to shop for cheap cheap stuff.
Stanley beach area: you can take the bus to the beach from central HK & there is the Stanley market and eat wonderful lunch at Paris Cafe.
Hong Kong foot massages.
Elevator thru the city was cool, lots and lots of restaurants, things to explore.
I had lunch at the Penninsula, great people watching - though you could do the tea as well, I think the lines get long for that.

HAVE FUN!

We went to Hong Kong in Nov 2006 and stayed at two different hotels - the Intercontinental and the Sheraton Hotel & Towers. Both are on the Kowloon peninsula and I'd definitely recommend either of them. If you book the Intercontinental, most definitely get a Harbor View room. It was spectacular, and still one of our favorite memories of the trip. The rooms at the Sheraton were on the smaller side, but everything was nice and the staff was very helpful. The Intercontinentals staff was wonderful to us too. We ended up at the Intercontinental the night we got there, because the Marriott told us, despite our confirmation email, that we did not have a reservation there. Lots of drama, they were so rude and mean to us that it turned us off of that chain of hotels forever.

We also enjoyed a side trip to Lantau to see the big Buddha. Totally touristy, but we had fun. Also we did tea at the Penninsula. Sort of annoying that you have to wait in line for it, but it was nice. Man Mo Temple. And going up the Peak! Spectacular views of the city at night, but wow, the lines to get up there can be long! There was a restaurant there, called The Peak, I believe, that we had a nice dinner at as well.

There is SO much shopping... every corner you turn. It was sort of crazy how many high end stores there were everywhere.

We did a side trip to Macau. It was ok for a day trip, the casinos were just starting to open up there and we went to the Wynn, but it definitely had a different feel from Vegas. I'm not into the whole Vegas thing but my FI has been a bunch of times and he didn't like Macau as much. But our friends went a year after us and enjoyed it a lot. They stayed at the Wynn and had a great experience.

Hong Kong is FANTASTIC for shopping!! Take an empty case!!

If you have time, try and see SAM the tailor. He's really famous and made suits for loads of stars / politicians etc. Can't remember exactly where his shop is but he does have a website so you should be able to find his address quite easily. DH wanted a shirt made and I ended up getting a cashmere trouser suit made as well!! You'd need to be there for a few days though as you have a couple of fittings.

There is a large shopping mall in Kowloon along from the Star Ferry which has lots of high end shops. Aberdeen market on the Island has cheap and cheerful (such as genuine "Scottish" cashmere jumpers for £12..I laughed with the seller as being Scottish myself, I knew fine well that the the jumper hadn't been anywhere near Scotland!!).

The Star Ferry is a must - fantastic views of the city (both HK Island and Kowloon) for about 20p!! Try and take a city tour as well worth the money.

If you like fun t-shirts (say with Disney characters etc) then Giordano (spelling?!) is good. They have several shops and would be the equivalent of GAP. Shanghai Tang is another brand worth investigating (though it's quite pricey) - they have two shops, one on the island and the other in the hotel opposite the Star Ferry.

If you have time (and are a big kid at heart) take the train out to Disneyland HK!! The train itself is worth a trip alone!! The windows are in the shape of Mickey's head and the park doesn't seem as busy as some of the other parks (we went ONE week after it had opened and the longest we had to stand in line was 10 minutes for any ride!).

Try to go to an area called Ap Lei Chau ( a building called South Horizons Building), there you will find the outlets for Lance Crawford and Joyce and Max Mara. Close by in the actual South Horizons area is a store called "Space" which is the outlet for Prada and Miu Miu.
In Central, go to the Peddar Building, which is right next to Shanghai Tang on Peddar St. There are lots of shops with outlet clothes, as well as a few second-hand designer shops.
Try to go to the Jade Market on Kowloon side...and bargain, bargain, bargain!!!

Hope on the MTR (local subway / tube equivalent) to Tung Chung, there is a huge outlet mall with Lanvin, Kate Spade, DKNY (under club 21), 7 for all mankind, and loads more.

I just went in March... wish I would've known about the Tung Chung.

Make sure to take the train up to Victoria Peak. It's beautiful! You can see all of HK and Kowloon and get some great pics.

A great place to eat too is the Panorama restaurant in the Renaissance Hotel in Kowloon. It's right on the water with a beautiful view of HK (go at night when everything is lit up!)

Enjoy your trip.

Definitely do the Ferry Ride to/from the Island/Kowloon. I think it ends up less than $1 USD and every night there is a laser light show put on by all the waterfront buildings.. i think at 8 or 9pm after the sun goes down. If you are into eating and dancing or bars, you must visit the Lan Kwai Fong area ("LKF" to locals). It is seriously the largest cross section of streets that have restaurants and bars that are constantly packed no matter what day of the week it is. Try a lychee martini somewhere!

On the day you go up Victoria's Peak (you will pass Jackie Chan's mansion), also go to Stanley Market. There you will find beautiful pashminas that cost like $100 HKD for 4 or 5. Mens silk ties are around $10 HKD each and several little stores to find souvenirs and the such.

Have fun!

Hey dear, approx how much is the discount for the outlet store? Are they slightly damage or simply overstock? Thanks!
