Hello,

I am looking into getting a 55” x 55” Hermes scarf.
Should I get 100% silk shawl
or
Should I get 70% cashmere and 30% silk?

Those of you who own Hermes shawls, what would you advise?

Thanks.

If you can, I’d strongly advise visiting a boutique to try both as this is a very personal choice. I don’t find them interchangeable in my wardrobe as each serves a different function. The hand feel of the all silk is divinely smooth. The cashmere- silk has a more warm/fuzzy feel. Both are luxurious. I am perpetually cold despite living in a warmer climate, so my cashmere-silk shawls are my most used Hermes products by far.

It really depends on your style, your wardrobe, your figure and what you’re comfortable with.
I love silk scarves but they no longer work for me due to a change in my lifestyle/wardrobe. The large format silk scarves tend to overwhelm me and I haven’t found a way to make them work for my frame.

I do own several cashmere shawls. I love that they can be used in cooler weather as I’m always cold. They also work very well with my new casual wardrobe and are great for when I travel.

However, it is a very personal choice. The best way to determine what works best for you is to try them both on to see what you lean towards. Good Luck and have fun trying them on!

The other thing to keep in mind with the 100% silk it's very slippery! So if you are like me and don't put a knot in the scarf it has a tendency to slip down. Easily fixed with different knots or scarf ring. But just something to keep in mind if you are lazy like me. Agree the 100% silk is perfect for the warm months and CSGM is perfect for the colder months and travel.

I agree with @MommyDaze that you should go to the boutique and try them both. I have a couple of giant silks and they are fabulous, but I will confess haven’t used them much. They seem more formal to me, and I am very casual. However, I recently read someone’s old post somewhere that because of their size, they can actually be more casual than a 90 silk, so I’m going to try to adopt that attitude and see if I can make it work.

The cashmere/silk shawls, OTOH, are the scarf format I use the most. I wear them most during the cold New England winters, but they are also great in fhe warmer months to combat chilly air conditioning. They seem to give off the right amount of warm for whatever situation they’re in, and they can fold down small enough to fit in a quart-size zip-lock bag. They can be a scarf, a shawl, a jacket, a blanket on an airplane, etc. I find them both versatile and super easy to wear.

I think it depends on your style, your lifestyle and where you live. I have a few silk GMs, and can count on one hand the times that I've worn them (combined). They feel kind of huge and slippery, even though I wear my GM dip dye quite a lot. (Not as slippery, I think.) I also wear 90s, but am rather knot challenged so I wear the 90s with a scarf ring most of the time. Not sure why I haven't experimented with rings and the 140 silks.

OTOH, I have many CSGMs and wear them all the time. Where I live we do not really have hot weather, so I can wear CSGMs year around. Also, as others have noted, they are great in over-air-conditioned places, so I find that I often wear them when visiting hot climates, too. Usually indoors and/or in the evening.

I agree that you should visit a boutique and try both styles on and see if you naturally gravitate to one of them.

Oh, and fair warning, they are a very slippery slope!!
Let us know what you decide on!

I love the 55 format, both in cashmere&silk and silk. There are two different silks available, a thinner spring/summer silk and a thicker autumn/winter one, which I like more. I find this silk dressier and a bit stiff, especially when new so I actually wear more my cashmere ones. They are good all year around. The thick silks are very durable imo and luxurious, the silky shine is something I love, but for everyday use I enjoy the warm soft cashmere ones more.

I would pic the design and colorway I like most before choosing the material.

If you are only looking to buy one I would probably pic the silk because silk scarves are so classic Hermès. It would last longer pristine because it would be for special occasions.

Hermès scarves & shawls are very addictive and easily make statement peaces so you might not be able to have just one in your wardrobe [emoji3]

As Serva mentioned there are 2 types of all-silk GMs. They are quite different.

1. Twill 140. Like most of their silk twill carres, just larger. This is the only kind of 140 I have as I'm not so keen on the Plume (see below). Really hardy. These make lovely shawls.

2. Plume (usually sold as part of the Summer range). Flat weave and lighter. Lots of people like these too.

CSGM are Winter only for me but in the right design I'd find one more usable on daily basis that a large pure silk in the same size. Plus, they stay where you put them more easily.

Agree with all the ladies above, and also how you intend to wear it. If it’s against wind I find the pure silk (winter silk) is good for that. However, cashmere is much warmer. I have combined both of them together as one piece (one side silk, one side cashmere, Hermès also releases this combo for one season as well) and find it suits me the most, as my skin is quite sensitive. This way, it’s both warm and silky! Something to think about. :)

I personally prefer cashmere-silk as I find the pure silk ones too stiff (in lack of a better word). Washed silk however is perfect in my eyes, unfortunately more expensive than regular silk.
But I agree that you should try to visit a store and try them in person!
