Can I use my Amex card to make purchases at Hermes in Paris? Australian Amex card doesn't have a pin. I'm afraid that Hermes won't accept it with just a signature. Can someone please confirm?

When I pay for anything in Paris using my Amex it always requests a signature even though I have a pin on the card. Everywhere else in Europe it works with just the pin LOL

Gosh I'm sooo happy tPf exists... I was worrying about exactly this issue (whether they take Amex at Hermes Paris at all... a friend told me he overheard a women complaining no one's taking Amex in Paris so I started panicking lol

also be aware that when you charge out of your home country with amex they charge additional fees on green + gold cards - as of last year, black + plat cards no longer have these fees.....

in general in the past year, i have come across a lot of places that no longer take amex

have fun in paris!!

I think all out-of-county cc's charge a fee.

They do. Visa/MC charge what's basically a currency conversion fee; if I remember right it's around 1-1.5% However, this is countered by the fact that they get far superior exchange rates vs what you can get through any other method, since they are trading huge amounts of currencies every day. Your issuing bank may tack on additional charges as well, though.

In terms of signature vs. pin, merchants in Europe should be aware that chip & pin cards haven't been widely adopted in some countries. You may need to explain that it's an overseas card with no chip (which they can see) and hence no pin. This was a HUGE issue when EU merchants converted to chip & pin.

(I used to work for an Amex competitor, but it's been close to five years, so my specifics aren't great anymore...)
