Each worker guards his or her own tools carefully. Retiring craftsmen sometimes chose a favoured pupil to pass their set on to. It takes about five years to become skilled enough to be let loose on your own Birkin bag. Employees typically have been trained for three years before arriving here, and will usually work with a more experienced craftsman for another two.
I also want to add that Hermes has started a training school for leather-goods craftsmen a few years ago. If I remember correctly, the course runs for 2 years and Hermes picks the top 5% of the best performing students to work for them. So all in all, for any workers to be qualified to make Birkins or Kellys, they have to have at least 10-12 years of solid and good performance on their belt.
To me, this makes the wait and $ for their bags totally worthwhile
Actually this is the reason why I love Hermes. Even though the demand for Birkins and Kellys are high and they know they can make more money by simply hiring more craftsmen and increase the production (which is what most companies would do), they refuse to sacrifice their standard!!
