Hello there!

So, my wonderful wife and I just finished paying off our student loans and for Christmas this year, I would like to surprise her with her first "nice" bag. To put it mildly, she deserves it. I don't think she has purchased a new bag in about 8 years (and even then, it was a Michael Kors she purchased on sale).

She is 30 y/o, an attorney, and is pretty conservative. She is elegant and dresses fairly formally/businessy, if that makes sense. A lot of work dresses, etc. She typically carries an Everlane tote, which she uses to hold her laptop, work, etc., and then she also carries a separate purse which holds her wallet, and various knick-knacks (chapstick, change, makeup). Her separate purse usually has two shorter straps and she either holds those straps or carries her purse on her shoulder. I'd like to get her something that would be fitting for work as well as the weekend (particularly, nice dinners, etc.). If possible, I'd prefer to spend about $2,500 or less ($1,500-2,000 would be ideal).

So far, I was thinking either the Celine Mini Belt Bag or the Chloe Faye (either day bag or traditional - I prefer the latter, but I worry about the compartment size and the former seems more practical). I'm wondering - is there anything that I should be looking at? Are these bags, dare I say it, "out?"

At day's end, I'd like something that is classic, conservative, and is not too recognizable. Practicality is important as well, since I see her wearing this all the time. I am dead set on something in a taupe-ish colorway, since she is typically drawn to black/neutrals/metallics.

If you need any additional information, I'm happy to help!

This is a nice sentiment. I must say that if it were me, I would much prefer to pick out the bag myself. Have you considered taking her out for a nice lunch and a day of shopping so she can select her perfect bag?

I agree that would typically be preferable (I, by way of example, am a particular person), but I ultimately have decided against doing so for a handful of reasons: (1) we live in a city with zero legitimate vendors, leaving e-commerce as the only option; (2) while this is a splurge that I've saved up for, she would feel uncomfortable "pulling the trigger" for something she truly wants, and will settle for Tory Burch (I made that mistake when I asked her to pick out a scarf at Hermes, she declined, and I got her one a few months down the road); (3) she suffers from extreme shopping paralysis (she has multiple unused gift cards to her favorite stores); and (4) she tends to value actually receiving a gift (with the exception of jewelry, which I've completely given up on, because she is particular about that).

So sweet! Out of your picks I would choose Celine belt bag. It is practical and understated, the only concern is that because of designer change of Celine house I’m not sure how much longer this style will last. Chloe Faye bag is beautiful but not quite as practical, also IMO a bit ‘dated’ if that is your concern.
If you are open to black bags I’d recommend LV as well, like Cluny bb in epi or Pochette Métis in Empreinte leather.

What about a ferragamo studio bag? They come in different leathers, colors and sizes. They can be carried as a top handle or shoulder bag. The leathers (except the suede versions) are fine in rain. They have the little metal feet so if she has to put the bag down on the floor in public places the base of the bag won’t come in direct contact with the possibly dirty floor. The bags are not very heavy which is another thing to consider when you add in the stuff she would normally carry in her bag and factor in that she may be carrying it for long periods of time during her work day and then on into an evening out. Good luck in your search and I hope you find the perfect bag for her. https://www.ferragamo.com/shop/us/e...&pageView:grid&minPrice:&maxPrice:&pageSize:&

This is such a sweet idea! Personally I’m not a fan of either the Celine or the Chloe, but I do like the suggestion of either a Prada or an LV. LV would be my first pic for a real workhorse of a bag but if you don’t want something instantly recognisable Prada is probably a better option, or an LV bag in leather, not canvas or at least not mono canvas. I really like LV Riverside, which is in Damier Ebene canvas, it’s a lovely bag that comes with a pretty pop of fuschia as well, and at 1880eur is within your budget :)

I agree with Ferragamo. Ferragamo and Tods are two of the most under-appreciated, under-the radar luxury brands. They’re not instantly recognizable, have impeccable quality (unlike the Prada horror stories I’ve seen on this forum), and are just not seen everywhere.

The real question is whether you find a style and color that you like with these two brands. They also go on sale, so if you watch the upcoming sales you can get one at a very good price.

My mother in law used to loan my wife a black epi Alma (LV) for her interviews when we finished uni and I always thought it really looked the part. I think its professional, under the radar, slick and super useful not to mention classic. Either that or Ferregamo/Tods in my opinion

I agree with the folks who suggested Prada or LV. The Prada totes are understated but elegant with plenty of room, and the leather is beautiful. The LV Neverfull is an absolute workhorse, looks great, holds a ton of stuff (I recommend the MM as the GM is huge) and the coated canvas holds up great in bad weather. The person who recommended Tod's had a great idea on that...it should get more consideration, but i am not clear on the price points there. The only reason i would shy away from the LV Neverfull is that everyone has it, so if you want to get her something unique, go with Prada.

What a nice idea.

I am also an attorney. I think first you have to decide whether you want to get her a big work bag, where she can dump her laptop and yellow pads, or the small purse she likes to carry in addition to that.

What is clear, for me, is that the Chloe Faye is not a bag that seems to fit your requirements. Not that practical but also not professionally looking at all. You cannot go into a meeting with a client with that chain clinging all the way, believe me. The Celine is a much better idea in my opinion.

For your budget other options I would explore for work bags:

- Saint Laurent. The Sac de Jour is such a classic work bag and so good value. Or you could get her the shopping tote, which is also a smart option for work, and you would have money to spare on a YSL clutch or small bag.

- Givenchy Antigona. Not my kind of bag but many people swear by it and it fulfills all your criteria.

- Bottega Veneta. One of my collages wears a BV black bag until she's done with it and then replaces it by the next. Understated but not boring, they function very well in a professional environment.

- Loewe Amazona. Not trendy, but a classic, and just about within your price range.

- Hermes. For your budget (and I guess depending where you live) you could actually get her a Garden Party, which is a very practical work tote and, you know, it is Hermes.

I personally would not recommend LV monogram canvas for an attorney, even less so one in the beginning of her career, unless you are very certain that it would it be appropriate in her professional environment.
