I have my engagement ring at the jewellery designer right now as I'm thinking of changing the setting into a Halo setting.

The center stone is a 2.1 carat square radiant cut diamond, set in a micro-pave band. The width of the band is about 3mm with 3 rows of diamonds and I've been thinking for the longest time that the width is a bit too thick that it made the centre stone look small. Unfortunately I don't want to change the band so I'm thinking of enhancing the center stone with a round of halo.

Now the question is how big do you think the side stones should be? My designer has sent me a rendering of what he thinks would look the best. It's got 12 2mm (0.03 ct) white diamonds and four 2mm sapphires at the corners. I love this look, but can't help to think would it look better if the side stones are a bit smaller? I've googled images of halo rings with similar size and most of them seem to have smaller side stones. What is your preference? please share your thoughts.

Your input is greatly appreciated. thank you thank you thank you!

this is what my ring currently looks like, on DH's chubby little hand :D

These are images from the internet with smaller side stones that kept me thinking if the stones on the halo should be smaller :confused1::confused1:

I just reset my sub-2ct pear to a halo and my jeweler used .03ct stones as well. It is a larger halo, so we did a bezel both around the center stone and the halo, so it has an art deco feel. We also did not put
stones on the band or the support wires+donut to keep the look clean. I personally love larger stones in a halo, but i can also appreciate the delicate look of smaller stones.

Have you tried any on irl? That may give you a better feel for whether younlike a bolder look or a more delicate look.

I think smaller stones in the halo would look better. You don't want anything to detract from the beauty of that amazing center stone, and I feel like the larger halo diamonds would do that. I think your ring is gorgeous with its current setting too though; doesn't look small to me at all!

I agree! Your ring is so pretty, I feel like the bigger halo diamonds take away from the centre stone

thanks everyone for your feedback. I haven't tried any on in real life yet. I've visited a few jewellery stores and most of the halos I've seen are with the smaller stones.

I called my designer yesterday an his reasoning for the size he chose was, he needed this size for the sapphires to make a visible difference. he said because I wanted to include sapphires on my ring, he felt that this would be the best proportion.

I've commissioned him to go ahead, but it's just something that you never know how you feel until you see the end result. ugh. don't you hate that feeling? the waiting and the uncertainty? I really really hope that it won't turn out ridiculous. I'll update everyone once I get the finished product back!

I think 2mm, or maybe even a tad bit smaller - 1.8mm even - are your best option. Because your band is as wide as it is, you're never going to have the delicate look that other halo settings with a single row of small diamonds have. I think if you go for tiny accent diamond around the main stone, you will throw off the design of the ring as a whole - you want these changes to look intentional, not pieced-together.

thank you 18 Karat. I read your reply a few times and i think what you said really makes sense to me. 2mm is what i'm going with so hopefully it'll come together nicely in the end. fingers crossed. :smile1:
