Hi everyone!

I would greatly appreciate some help on deciding which bag to bring to a wedding this weekend. It’s a Saturday evening wedding on Long Island, and no guidance was given on dress code (black tie, etc.). I’m wearing a black dress, black patent pumps, and white gold/platinum jewelry. Unfortunately, most of my purses are either too large (medium lady Dior, medium CCH), or too casual for a wedding, so I’ve narrowed it down to 4 options.

1. YSL small Loulou, black w/SHW
2. Black satin/beaded clutch
3. Medium Dior Caro, grey stone w/ruthenium hardware (I’ve pretty much ruled this one out though, due to the light color, and fear of color transfer)
4. Midnight blue clutch w/floral-ish embellishment and sequins

Thank you so much!

I think one of the clutches might be fun/different and am assuming its not a style you get to use often (I am leaning towards the last one). However, will you get annoyed having to carry without a strap? If so, the YSL makes sense given black with shw and fact you're wearing platinum/ white gold jewelry, but it's a bit more of an everyday look IMO and I'm also a lunatic about "matching" and I personally might not pair the regular leather with patent shoes.

I like bag number 1 the most. You will be able to carry all your things such as touch up makeup and everyday essentials. You also would not have to worry about potentially losing your stuff if you participate in cocktails the entire time. I like knowing where all my stuff is at all times.

As for the patent shoes, if they are pumps I might reconsider. A sandal style heel would be fine in patent leather in a neutral shade as it’s not super obvious in the evening.

Tbh, any of the 4 bags would work since your outfit is black.
If you want a bit of pop, in terms of color, the Dior Caro bag would be a nice contrast.
If I'm wearing black, I try to have my bag a different color so that it doesn't look too heavy.

Agree with the above in terms of security and comfort, a strap comes in handy, especially when you are grabbing food, a drink, and need to be hands free.

You are correct in assuming that the clutches are not used very often! I live in jeans, and NEVER dress up - which is definitely why my bags are not super wedding appropriate!
That was my issue with the YSL too - I worry that it’s too casual… Good point about not matching with the patent, as well. Oy! So many things to take into consideration! Thank you so much for weighing in, I really appreciate it!

That was definitely the appeal to me as well. I exclusively wear bags with a crossbody option, so a clutch/strapless bag option will probably get on my nerves…

So the problem with the shoes, is that they’re really all I have. I literally never dress up, and recently purged my shoe collection big time. I’d also rather not have to spend $$ on a shoe that I will realistically only wear once! But I appreciate, and don’t disagree with your suggestion at all.

I completely agree with you, regarding a pop of color when wearing mostly/all black. And the hands-free option is definitely more appealing than holding a clutch, or realistically, making my poor husband hold it for me!

Thank you for weighing in - from your posts, I know that you have impeccable taste, and I really appreciate your opinion!

While I understand why a shoulder or crossbody bag would be more convenient so that you're hands-free, neither works particularly well with your dress. The last one, midnight blue, is elegant and appropriate with your dress. Are you absolutely sure that it doesn't have a short chain tucked inside? Many evening clutches do have that.

Thank you! It definitely came with a detachable chain, I just have to remember where I put it!

I really like that dress!
I'd go for one of the clutches...the second one
 Thank you so much!
I’ve always felt awkward in dresses, but this one is really comfortable, feminine, and flattering!

Looks like clutch number 2 is the one I’ll be going with! I really appreciate the help!!

May I ask, what brand that dress is from? I'm in the same situation :D

Of course!
It’s London Times. I actually got mine on Amazon (!), but Nordstrom Rack currently has it (in petite) for $45!!

On Amazon it’s listed as the London Times Kourtney Maxi. It’s pretty true to size, and I find that it actually looks even better on, than in the picture. Lots of luck, I hope it works out for you!
