Hi Fellow Bag Ladies,

I want to get a new bag (havn't got one since Sept 2018) but I cannot decide on which one. These are the contenders:

- Dior Book Tote in Navy Oblique - Pros: It is large enough to fit whatever I need; I really like the look of it; I don't have anything similar; it's on the more affordable side; Cons: It is currently sold out at my local Dior boutique; I'm concerned it will look dated in 5 years.
- Chanel Gabrielle Small - I love the look of this bag and the different ways it can be carried; I don't have anything similar; it is available at my local boutique; Cons: it might look dated in 5 years.
- Chanel Classic Flap in medium - Pros: it is a classic and will never date; the bag style works for me based on experience; it is available at my local boutique; Cons: I have bags in similar style (Reissue 226, Chanel Boy, Gucci Marmont).
- Chanel Coco Handle small - Pros: I like the look of this bag; I don't have anything similar; it is available at my local boutique; Cons: it might not be in trend anymore in a few years.
- Hermes Lindy 26 or 30 - Pros: it is a very practical bag; I don't expect it to go out of style (I could be wrong?); I really like the look of it; I don't currently own anything similar; Cons: it is pricier than the other options; it is not readily available (I need to order it at my local Hermes boutique first).
- Dior J'adior bag - Pros: I love the look of this bag; it's on the more affordable side; Cons: I think it might be on its way out.

What do you think? Do you think some of these bags will become dated in a few years? Do you think it's worthwhile to wait for an Hermes Lindy?

Between all the choices you mentioned, I'd go with either a Hermes Lindy or the Chanel Classic Flap. Like you mentioned, the other bags might be trendy now but who knows if they stand the test of time. IMO I don't think they will, especially the Book Tote seems to be a bag that won't last that long.

I whittle it away to Classic Flap if you don't' have one already. Like the Chanel (Kelly-style) that was around in the 1980s/90s and that my mother had, I love the Coco. For me it's classic looking enough to carry for years regardless of what other people are buying/wearing.

The Lindy is also a good choice, a very cute and versatile bag, but you may have to take colour/leather/hw choice that's first available.

There's no future proofing fashion. Whole labels come and go, there could be total hobo trend round the corner, who knows? :shrugs:

Have you tried on the two different sizes of Lindy and Classic Flap? I bought the Lindy 30 first and it's great but the 26 is my favorite for everyday. These two, I think, are more likely to stand the test of time.

This is a tough, but fun problem to have:-) I’m probably in the minority, but I really don’t like the look of the Lindy. If the most important thing to you is looking dated, then the Chanel flap or Lindy would be your best option.

Of your choices, I would go with the Dior. It’s fun and even though it’s very “now” I think if you love it, you’ll still love it a few years down the road.

Thanks for everyone’s feedback.

The Chanel classic flap is probably the safest option here but I don’t love this bag. I feel that if I were ever to get one it would have to be in a colour I absolutely love, like a cobalt blue or a cool grey.

The Lindy is another safe one and I do love this bag but like Papertiger said, I might have to be flexible when it comes to colour/leather. Size wise i’m definitely more leaning towards the 26. I actually saw a few Lindys on Hermes’ Australian website this past week but there was always something off, either the colour or the size or both, and they were snatched up within hours.

When I was younger I bought a lot of IT bags (the Chloe Paddington, Fendi Spy, Marc Jacobs Stam) and whilst I enjoyed using them, I wouldn’t consider them smart purchases. My one criterion now when it comes to buying a designer bag is that the bag needs to be able to be worn in 10 years’ time without feeling dated. I do still indulge in It bags every now and then (Chloe Nile, Gucci Marmont) but I would always try to purchase them at a discount.

Buy the bag you love then. I see so many bags around, old ones, new ones, I never think any look "dated". If anything it is refreshing to see bags that are not 'on trend'. You should get the bag that makes you happy. You're buying it for YOU, not onlookers. Good luck with your choice!

this is just based on my preference:
1. Lindy-I've liked this bag for a long time but I just can't get to the price point. BUT the Lindy and Halzan are still on my list. I like that the Lindy looks so unassuming and I've held them in the boutique in varying leathers and sizes. So so so pretty.
2. Chanel coco handle small-I think this will be a nice bag for years to come. It has a similar shape to the kelly and peekaboo. I think it's a gorgeous bag.
goodluck with your decision!
If you want to try other styles of bag you could look at Delvaux and Valextra. These are both handmade. Although I'd choose Delvaux over Valextra in a heartbeat.

I, while not a huge Chanel fan, would go with the Coco handle. I think the classic flap is overdone so I would personally steer clear, but that is just my opinion. I think the Coco Handle is a very classic shape/style without falling into the overdone classic flap style. I personally don't think the Coco handle will look dated any time soon. I do think the Gabrielle will look dated (like you fear) as IMO it is just not a classic style (plus I really don't care for the bag LOL).

I think the Hermes Lindy would be my second pick but be sure about the size as another poster said. I think the 30 might be a bit big for an everyday bag. Also, you cannot go wrong with Hermes quality and I think the bag would stand the test of time, style-wise. If I had it, it is a bag I could see myself still rocking when I was in my 80s.

I do like both Dior bags but agree that they will start to look dated especially the J'adior with the hardware. I think the tote would be fairly classic-looking if it wasn't covered with the Dior Monogram print. I do think the print will look dated. I think totes are a pretty classic style but can look dated based on the print. If they make it without the print, then I don't think it would look very dated a few years down the line but it is very large. It might not be the best option for an everyday bag if that is what you are looking for.

Since your main concern is that the bag may be dated in 5 years, I would go with Chanel Classic Flap in a neutral color. Keep in mind that certain colors can can also look dated after a couple of year (anyone remember the teal craze in the late 80’s/early 90’s).
The lindy is a great choice but a 30 is huge. I tend to like the Lindy in bright colors but to my point above, a trendy color can potentially date a bag thought with H, it doesn’t always apply.
I actually love the Chanel coco handle and I think it’s classic enough that it will withstand the test of time. I would actually put that over the Lindy if you’re looking for a classic bag.

I think Lindy and Chanel won’t get dated in 5 years. Since you already have Similar styles of Chanel classic flaps, u can choose hobo/ coco handle/ Lindy. Maybe you can consider what colors of them are available in stores, choose the one with the color you like.

From all of your options given, the best one for my opinion is the Hermes Lindy. It may be pricier and harder to get but it will give you a better alternative to what you already have in your collection. Goodluck!
