I want a long pearl necklace. I am looking at AAA cultured freshwater pearls. I am having mine made to order. First, which length is the best. I do not want a clasp at all. Should I get them 30? 40? 50? 60? inches? And most important, which should I get, I can get a strand of 7-8mm black AAA freshwater pearls or 6.5-7.5mm white AAA freshwater pearls. One consideration is that the black pearls cost a little over 20 percent less than the white ones, even though they are slightly larger.
So what length and which color would be the most versatile and useful? Which would look the best? This would be my first pearl necklace, and I want to make a good choice. What color clothes do each match best?
Thanks.

I think the length will depend on whether you want to wear it just one strand or double it or triple it at different lengths or just one long strand.
As far as the color of the pearls. Are the black freshwater pearls dyed?, if so, my choice would be the white ones. I am sure you will love your final choice.

I would go with the white pearls because they are classic and match everything. I know the black pearls will match a lot, but go with the white for the longer strand. Then maybe later add the black pearls. As far as length, how do you want to wear the pearls? If you want to wear the pearls for long length only, go with the 30in. If you want the pearls to wrap around a few times, go with 40+ inches. I say go with the longest length that you can afford. This way you can play around with the pearls by doing them in a knot and double or triple stacking the necklace. I also think that white is the most versatile of the two choices. So my vote is for the white necklace with 40+ inches long!

The black fw will def be dyed. I personally like 60" as a length, but maybe you could go to a costume shop and get a few really cheap necklaces that are the different lengths to play around with them. I'd get the white, since they're more classic, but if the black pearls fit your personality, then go for it! Get whatever you think will make you the most happy!

No problem. I hope you'll like the necklace.

I got this from another site but it does show how you can play around with the necklace. It's really quite versatile so have fun... :D

Thanks! They came this morning and they are beautiful. I really love them. Just gorgeous and so versatile. A real keeper!
I also have a couple of older pearl (one double strand 8mm about 22 inches with a gold and diamond flower clasp--my grandma's) and a large gold and pearl brooch and earrings and two rings. I wanted to learn how to re-knot my old necklace before it really needs it and went to pearl-guide.com to learn more about pearls and perhaps get a new hobby and learn to knot my grandma's and some loose pearls I am looking at. Fell in love with some keshi, which I saw for the first time on that forum.
Well, I registered and waited a few days and learned so much and really enjoyed reading all of the helpful information, but could never post my questions or see some of the photos others were posting. I finally got an email that said:
"Account removed at Pearl-Guide.com - Pearl Forum!
Unfortunately your registration at Pearl-Guide.com - Pearl Forum did not meet our membership requirements. Therefore your registration was deleted."

I emailed the webmaster a couple of times asking what I had done wrong in my registration and how to correct it and have not had any answers or replies.

I was shocked I have no idea what requirements they are talking about nor what I was lacking. I really am puzzled. I still would like to learn to knot my own pearls correctly and just to learn and enjoy pearls. Does anyone here know why I was rejected as I have been on many boards of all types of topics (mostly diet and nutrition) and this has never happened to me. I feel so rejected! For a day or two there I almost wanted to give up on pearls altogether, as I was so flabbergasted!
Are there any other forums that discuss pearls in general and knotting in particular? Or do any of you know perhaps what I had done wrong in registering for the pearl-guide forum. I think that it would be a grand craft to learn to do well. And pearls, especially freshwater, are so much more affordable than gold jewelry these days. So I thought I had found my new hobby and now feel a bit put off.

One more question, please. Will it damage my new strand to use my brooch as a pendant to hold the strands in place? How durable are fresh water pearls? I think it would look spectatcular but do not want to hurt my new beauties.

I've heard a few people got rejected from the Pearl Guide, which is a bit odd, because I'm a fairly new member and there weren't any sort of weird registration process for me. Try again, and if it doesn't work, PM me and I'll PM the mods for you on TPG.

Thank you Callire! I could never log in, any time when visiting the site, so I had to register a couple of times to just log in, which I could do, but never have been able to post any questions yet. So I registered again, just now. It is a bit confusing.
