I love them, but oh my goodness, the sulfur smell is horrid! I'm burning candles, but I was wondering if anyone had a tried-and-true "cure" for this offensive odor? :sos::whiteflag:

Ugh I know the smell you're talking about LOL. I just open the windows to get the air circulating, rather than covering it up (sometimes doing that can make it smell worse).

Someone once told me that if you light a match, let it burn for a few seconds then snuff it out (repeat 5-6 times) the smell will disappear because carbon molecules neutralise odours. They're heavier, or something?

i dont have a trick to get rid of the smell once its there, but the smell comes from over cooking. if you are steaming them, they really only need 6-8 minutes. ive found the best way to have them is roasted...the flavor is amazing, and they dont smell that way!

Yeah, we do brussel sprouts all the time (I love them!!!) but I have never noticed a small. Maybe a febreze candle?

I think the carbon/match thing only works on gas.... ?

Ooh I know - put some white vinegar in a bowl halfway full and let it sit out for a day or so. It neutralizes everything!! (And I have two Basset Hounds, so trust me, I know!)

:ty: i_wona, bagaholic, and jsh!
I ended up opening the windows and blowing some fans. I also have a bowl of vinegar out (gmta, jsh!). I think the smell is dissipating, thank goodness.

Bagaholic, I will remember not to overcook them next time! Roasting them sounds sooo good! I don't know why people seem to hate brussels sprouts so much..they're delicious!

^ Me too!

I love them roasted in the oven with a little olive oil, sea salt & cracked pepper.

I read that there's some compound in them or something that certain people can taste and others can't. It's a genetic thing. Anyway, for the people who can taste it, it makes the brussels sprouts taste SUPER bitter. I think most people just buy into the hype & are too chicken to try them, though! LOL

^SO weird, it's like that genetic thing with asparagus LOL

OMG I loooove asparagus!!! It does taste a little bitter to me, but it doesn't really bother me. So idk if I have that gene or not?

OT, but my favorite asparagus ever is pretty much the same way as I do brussels sprouts, except I cook it on the stovetop in a grill pan. I do med-high heat with a little EVOO, sea salt & pepper. When it's done sometimes I squeeze a little lemon juice over it... soooo good! I like it still a little crunchy, though. I HATE boiled mushy veggies!!! lol

I think she means that some people metabolize asparagus in a way that makes their urine smell. Hope this isn't TMI, but I never heard of this until my father told me that's why he doesn't eat asparagus and then I realized I have this issue too LOL! Fortunately it's temporary and it's not like anyone else can tell.

^ Yeah, I've heard people say about a few foods that they don't eat them b/c it makes their pee smell. I don't get it... who is smelling all these people's pee?!

Sorry, I know that off topic and gross! lol

Ohh, okay, I've never heard of that.

I ummm, am also not in the habit of smelling my urine , but I don't think that is a problem for me...but now I'm all curious. :roflmfao:

LOL Claire!
