I know I just posted about searching for the perfect purple-based navy, and now I'm posting about red. I've very color-driven in my bags! Anyway, I've been exploring Rough and Tumble lately and came across their Cerise color. I guess it's technically a pink, but it reads red to me in every photo I've seen, and it just may be the shade of red I've been searching for for ages! It's here:

I am trying to decide what bag I should order in this color, and I think I'm down to two choices:
  • The Kirigami: I'm draw to this because it seems to be one of the more "formal" styles R&T offers, and for some reason, I feel like red should be on a more "formal" bag. Not that the Kirigami is a particularly formal style - it's not like it's a Chanel classic flap or a Lady Dior. But still, I think it's one of the more "formal" offerings R&T has. The style itself is right up my alley - an open top shoulder bag. My struggle/hesitation with this option is that I have a lot of bags in this open top shoulder bag category already. I'm also not sure what size I would want with this option (it comes in two sizes). The smaller one seems like it would better fulfill this weird idea I have of a more "formal" style for a bag in this color, but I suspect I would find the larger size more functional for my needs and what I carry. This is what the Kirigami looks like (photo of of the large size, and it is a different red leather than the one I want):

  • One of the convertible styles like the hobo or boho: I would still need to narrow down specifically which style if I go for this, but the general idea is to go with one of the styles that offers 3-way carry - shoulder, crossbody, and backpack. I am very much drawn to the option of convertible carry in one bag because as a new mom, I just feel like it would be really convenient. The 3-way carry convertible styles is why I started looking at R&T in the first place. I envision it taking me through the toddle and young child years when I suspect I will very much appreciate having the option for backpack carry. (I have the option with my current diaper bag, and despite never being a backpack girl before, I am loving it!) However, this is obviously a super casual style, and I'm having a hard time thinking of this beautiful red color in a casual style bag. Maybe this is just something I need to get over? I also slightly worry that when I am out of the toddler and young child years and no longer necessarily "need" different carry options in one bag that I would stop using the bag all together, and I really don't want to do that for whatever bag I get this leather in because I really do think it's likely my perfect shade of red. This is a photo of one of the Boho styles (it is in the Cerise for the main body. I would have my version all in one color - no contrast strap color):

Any thoughts or advice on what I should go for? The more "formal" Kirigami option, which better fulfill my vision of a red bag and is a style that I know works for me. But, I literally don't need another bag in that kind of style, and going for it would only be fulfilling a color desire for me, not a bag need/purpose. And going with the Kirigami means that I would very very likely still buy another R&T bag down the line to fulfill my desire for one of their 3-way convertible bag options. Considering that I am trying to minimize my bag purchases and ultimately downsize, that's less than ideal. So I could "kill two birds with one stone" and get this in one of the 3-way convertible bag option right off the bat. It would fulfill both my color desire and a bag need/purpose. But I worry that those styles are too casual for this leather color. I almost worry that it's would veer on sloppy. When I think of someone carrying a beautiful red bag, I seem to only be able to conjure up images of really "formal" and "elegant" bags like the Lady Dior, etc. Is a slouchy hobo style bag too informal for this beautiful red? What would you do?

I am like you - for me I like a red bag to be slightly more formal and ladylike, I don’t know why but I do.

Both bags are lovely but I would go for the Kirigami, and probably in the smaller size. That way, if you do find that you still want their hobo style later on, it will be different in size as well as style/color.

Thank you! I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks more formal and ladylike for a red bag. I felt like I was being so silly and unreasonable as I was writing the post. And, I mean, maybe I am, but I still just have an image/feeling of red bags being best suited for more formal bags.

Yes, the Kirigami in the smaller size I think would best suit the “more formal” image I have. And the smaller size would be a bit different since other similar bags I have are bigger. I just worry I would find the small too small.
I think I need to figure out what truly is my bag usage/needs/preferences these days. I’m very much still in the mind set of pre-pandemic days where big bags were a no-brainer. These days between WFH and nj commute (which means smaller bags are just fine) and new baby (which means maybe I should stick with big bags), I’m all confused!
