Help me out with cocktail dress do's & don'ts!

I am going to an evening engagement cocktail party. I was told the dress code is no jeans for guys; either nice top with slacks, sport jacket & slacks, or suit. My husband is going to be wearing a suit.

The girls are to wear a party/cocktail dress, but it seems like the dresses I keep seeing are kind of casual when I type it in searches. If my husband is wearing a suit, what kind of dress should I wear?

I'd wear whatever made me feel comfortable or whatever seemed appropriate given the location & attendees or whatever I felt like wearing! :smile:

But if do's and don't are more of what you're looking for...

btw, ita that most dresses & looks identified as cocktail appropriate seem less formal than "traditional" cocktail etiquette. But, I think the confusion comes from the fact that virtually any late afternoon/evening get together can be called a "cocktail party", so the dress code becomes a separate matter entirely. <shrug>

That's true... I was confused about all the jersey style dresses on Ebay identified as cocktail dresses, but then I read on the In Style guide that jersey is out. What do you think?

Hmmm, I think it depends on the jersey. Jersey is comfortable, drapes beautifully, and is figure flattering. It can be dressed up with accessories, too. Many designers/brands use it, so I can't imagine that it's really "out". Also, it seems to me that jersey appears more casual in photos than irl (where it's easier to see texture, weight, silkiness, etc.), so this is one of those cases where jersey is probably better purchased in person than online, if you go the jersey route.
