I think you are (perhaps) responding based on your personal experience, - I think comtraceptive failure is relatively rare - and she didn't need to snare him, he already married her - I just think that in a new marriage like that where there is a bunch of money involved, it's probably a good idea to wait 10 minutes before you bring a baby into it. Again, JMO!!
Of course, my personal experience will affect the way I evaluate things, just as yours will affect you. But if you read my posts, you will see that I am generally quite an objective person and tend to make a lot of my comments based on my general knowledge, rather than solely on what has happened to me.
It could be argued that your feeling that women don't 'just get pregnant' is heavily based on your own experiences, too. Perhaps you are a very controlled, methodical person when it comes to sex (not a criticism, BTW
)?
I agree, contraceptive failure is relatively rare, although, not nearly as rare, for some methods, as you might expect:

From [1] except combined oral contraceptive, calculated from [2].
It is interesting to note that it is 3% for the (non-combined) pill, which, coincidentally, is (according to Roo) about as rare as false allegations of domestic abuse, in the US!
However, getting carried away, particularly when you are married/in a serious relationship and thinking; 'Well, even if I get pregnant, it wouldn't be the end of the world, would it?!' is pretty common, I should imagine.
I agree, it would be a very good idea to wait and plan, but life, love and hormones don't always run on good ideas...
