When we are at home my wife hangs her current bag on a hook on the back of our bedroom door. It hangs there 12-14 hours each day. She has large bags and fills them so there pretty heavy. Will this harm the bag or weaken it.

If a bag has rolled handles, it definitely will damage the handles, IMHO, giving them that crease in the middle that may not come out if the bag is hung that way for long periods of time. Bags with flat straps may be able to handle it a bit better, but I wouldn't really hang them up when they're filled either, TBH, as that may still be too much stress over time. Maybe she could set aside a chair or table specifically for placing her bags when she's home?

Hanging a large bag like that on a little hook would DEFINITELY make me nervous. Nothing immediately would happen, but over time you're adding additional stress to the handles. I always set my purse down on a surface when I'm at home.

I am a bit compulsive about wonky shaped-handles on my bags. If I hang a bag (loaded or unloaded) on a hook, I first slide a roll of TP over the hook end and balance the handles of the bag on that. The handles then remain shaped for a shoulder and it eases stress points on rolled handles. I do this to straighten kinks out of handles, when I have bags arrive loose and flying around in a shipping box.

I don't mind hanging my bags, but it's probably b/c I have so many I can't fit them all into my closet. I use a wider closet hanger so it doesn't have that crease that so many people talk about and I also keep them completely empty.

Hanging the handbag might cause damage the stress on the handbag due to the weight and pulling.

I try my best not to hang any of my handbags for this reason:D

I don't think it is a good idea to hang bags. A lot of the bags talked about here are quite heavy, even when empty. Hanging places a lot of stress on the handles and straps. Not just the leather parts, but on the buckles, o-rings, etc where they join onto the bag. I always put my bags on a chair when I'm not using them and the only time I would hang is maybe over the back of a chair in a restaurant and then only for short periods of time.

Is she trying to break the leather in? I've heard many people putting weights/books in bags and hang on doorknobs hoping to speed up the breaking in process. I think that's fine... but maybe use a larger hook?

me too i never hang my bags because of that. i think if your wife wants to hang her bag it would be best if the bag is empty .
