What are the handbag styles every girl needs? (note: style/occasion/shape, NOT brand). Hoping this might be a helpful starting point for those trying to build their collection

A clutch for evenings
A big roomy tote bag (for the beach, shopping, etc)
A cute satchel for daytime use
A minimalistic/clean-line purse for the office
An elegant shoulder bag for evening hands-free use

What others?

I agree.. this covers pretty much what a girl should have.. but this is just style...

its the colors where the problems starts~!!!!
a lady would like different colors in each style!:P

I guess a zippered bag for travel?

Looking at what you've listed, I've yet to own a decent evening clutch and daytime satchel! I have too many totes and shoulder bags and dressy bags but not a satchel.

You cannot have a collection without a slouchy hobo.. that is prob my favorite style of all. ;)

Then you need to have a messenger bag for those days when you need to be hands free.

For people that need shopping suggestions, how about we start gathering a list of what bags we have (or want) for each of these categories:

A clutch for evenings - BV Knot Clutch
A big roomy tote bag (for the beach, shopping, etc) - Longchamp Le Pliage
A cute satchel for daytime use - Balenciaga City/LV Speedy
A minimalistic/clean-line purse for the office - YSL Muse
An elegant shoulder bag for evening hands-free use - Fendi Baguette
A slouchy, butter soft hobo - Balenciaga Day
A crossbody bag for hands free days - Chanel Flap

Sorry to say I don't follow these directives. The only thing that works for me are shoulder bags in almost every setting. Work, play, grocery shopping, and in some cases formal wear. Most of the time I will wear a demure, tiny clutch bag with a shoulder strap tucked into the bag when dressing formal. The strap makes it easier to stand and hold a drink and a dinner plate! I, personally, just prefer to have my arms and hands free!
