You can unlock and release the strap so the top opening of the bag can be opened wider, but the strap does not come off. It is sewn to the back side of the bag. When I need more room in my large n/s Hamilton tote, I'll take off the lock, release the belt, then re-attach the lock to the bare hook. Once the belt is released, you can readjust the belt along the sides of the bag to spread the top of the bag wide open. The saffiano leather of the strap is pretty stiff, so the belt will stick out awkwardly unless you nest the ends under the short handles. What I do is nest the loosened ends of the belt under the upright short handles and carry it that way so the belt doesn't stick out.

You can remove the lock but the bag loses it's distinctive look when you do that.

I use it without the lock sometimes, just a simpler look. Still a beautiful bag.
