I don't have mine with me today, but I am 98% sure the strap does detach. What's great about the strap is that it is really long--a lot of times Coach makes straps that are just a hair too short.
I have the bag in jade patent leather and love it! It's very slouchy and very light. It fits an incredible amount of stuff--much more than you would think!

Yes, the crossbody strap detaches. I have a walnut Hailey and absolutely love her! She's plenty roomy enough for me (similar in capacity to my medium Carly or medium Zoe), and amazingly lightweight when carried with the shorter shoulder strap. I just use the crossbody strap when I need my hands free. And she's just so pretty! She is very slouchy, but I love that, too, although it does sometimes make the zipper harder to zip or unzip.
I just bought my fifth Hailey. I have plum leather, black leather, black sig, raspberry sig, and khaki sig. I love Hailey more than I ever loved my Zoes!
