Guccissima rehab/redye project - opinions please!

Hello everyone!

After looking at the Coach rehab thread, I wanted to pick myself up something that I could try my hand at re-dyeing!

I got a Guccissima wallet, with chain - although it is very pretty it is in need of a sprucing.

So my question is, what colour should I redye it? I will probably use it for a bit then sell, so keeping that in mind, what colours do you gals think? Or should I leave it the same colour?;)

I like it the way it is. Keeping it white will let you wear it over the spring and summer season. Also, you could wear it to formal events such as weddings or dinner parties.

I'm not a Gucci expert at all. From my Bal forum knowledge from reading other members' redye threads, I wouldn't recommend to dye it. If your wallet is really dirty and damaged, it would be OK to try. But if it is still in a good condition, I would suggest you to enjoy it as it is.

Most of the members who tried to dye their Bal bags, they were happy at that moment. But later they regretted and said never do it again. Main reason is they change the leather's texture. Also it might have paint peeling and color fading problems. Bal and Gucci use different kind of leathers. But LMB's Barbara, reputable leather repair specialist in Bal forum, said newer white Bal lethers aren't penetrated dyed color well like the older seasons' one. It seems Bal changed the finish and the new finish didn't make dye penetrate a color well. She doesn't recommend to dye a white Bal to a different color. It might be the case to Gucci leathers too.

I haven't checked Gucci bags' redye job. If you have a chance, please check it before you dye your bag. Good luck!

Thanks for the opinions/suggestions girls!

Just a little more info; the clutch is very badly used/scratched/beaten up/browned from the tremendous use.

I am either going to stick with the same colour it is now (beige) or dye it blue. (Pic below)

This weekend I'm going to a leather dye shop to get advice/potentially buy the leather dye (not sure about the colour yet!). Hopefully they can give me some tips on how to dye it, or whether I should just try and clean it with some of the products they have...

But if they do suggest dyeing, blue or beige (the colour it is now)?

Beige would be classic. I thought it was white in the pic.) You could try beige, and then if you don't like it beige, dye it blue. Coz if you dye it blue, you can't go back!!

OK, then I vote for a re-beige makeover, if you wore it that much the colour obviously suits you

I've dyed shoes before (white to nude) but never bags, only a thought but I think if you go away from the natural colour too much the indentations of the Guccissima print may make the dye settle more thickly and make the Gs too dark and look artificial.

I second, papertiger!

I think the original color looks great, but it depends what's your preference and what color outfits you are thinking to wear it with. I can't tell whether it's a patent or not, if is, recolor can be tricky

Thanks girls!

phoebe.bqueen, it is just leather and not patent or else I probably wouldn't be as daring :P

I think I'm going to go with the beige - I don't want it looking fake or anything with a different colour settling in the stamped leather. Hopefully I will be able to do it once I get my dye so I can post the finished results~!

Doing the beige should be pretty easy and the transformation will look really good, since you're not really changing the base color. I have redyed my Princey beige from off white and it looked brand new. Then I redyed a pair of dark metallic bronze gloves to a dark tan/beige and although it looked okay, it wasn't as nice as the Princey. HOWEVER, I have a white Hysteria Top Handle that is in need of a touch up and I know I can touch it up and make it come alive again, but I want it a dark aubegine purple and I'm going for it!! I've been sort of lagging cuz I wasn't sure I want to take that chance, but I'm now ready to dive all in. Since the Hysteria has so many pleats, it's not going to be an easy task, much like the guccissima emboss but I'm using Tarrago and that stuff just seems to seep into leather crevasses. I will shoot you some pics when it is done, regardless of the outcome. Wish me luck!!! And don't freak out between coatings, it takes approx 3 coats til it is perfect. And never, NEVER, forget to use preparer before any dying is done!! THAT is key to a smooth, natural look. Good luck with your project!! I think you may have enlightened me to finally start mine!! :salute:

I am very slightly worried but at the same time hugely excited (esp since you have clearly done your homework). I wanna see the before and after shots :P.
