Hi All,
This is my first post on tpf after lurking for months.
I'm looking to purchase a new bag for daily use. Based on my budget, I've zeroed it down to the Gucci Soho Disco and the YSL Toy Loulou, both in black.

I would (ideally) like to use this bag for a long time and am just not sure which one to get. I've read and watched a ton of reviews on the Disco but I'm genuinely concerned about the tassels splitting or just looking dated in 5-10 years time. On the other hand, the YSL is a nice option but am unsure of whether its good for daily wear (taking to work, on vacations, running errands etc).

It's the first designer bag that I'm buying myself and I want to be 100% sure.

Please help!

I only have the Gucci Disco so can’t comment on YSL bag but I’ve had the Disco (two actually, one red, one black) for over two years and even though my collection has grown a lot since then (I got bitten bad by the Chanel bug [emoji15]) i still use my Discos a lot and they never feel dated. Every time I use it, I’m amazed at how much it holds and how easy it is to carry.

I have the Gucci Disco and also can't comment on the YSL. I like it, but I have noticed a few flaws. One- I have a large Chanel wallet and it *just barely* fits in the Disco. It gets kind of snagged on the teeth every time I wrangle it in and out and stabs my soul every time. I really should use a smaller wallet with it. Two- I have no idea how this happens but sometimes the Disco gets flipped upside down and stuff falls out of it. Maybe someone else has experienced this and can explain but it's something with how the straps are attached. It can become top heavy if you're lifting it off a chair or out of your car or something and just flip itself upside down. I have not experienced any wear to the tassel, so I wouldn't worry about that. I have gotten annoyed that the strap doesn't have a keeper by the buckle to keep the free end down, so it tends to flip out. Overall though it's a really good versatile bag. I have 2 small kids and it's the most versatile bag I own in terms of staying hands free but still stylish.

I vote for the Gucci Disco because I just don't get the appeal of the YSL bags. They all look like fake Chanel to me.

Congrats on your first designer bag! Very exciting!

im getting a black w/ghw toy lou next week. it's stylish yet classic and i think it helps elevate an outfit more. soho disco is nice and timeless but i just find it a little drab like nothing exciting to look at. but that's just me personally. :smile:

How did you pick between the ghw and shw on the toy lou lou? I keep going back and forth!!

i went with the ghw because i wear mostly gold accessories. also because the ghw in the lolou is more aged/brass and doesn't stand out too much so i can still wear a biker jacket or boots with shw without them clashing.

Do you feel like the gold is dressier? The sa was definitely pushing the ghw over shw when I was at the store...almost made me feel like she didn’t have any silver left lol

I bought the toy loulou last year (black with shw) and I love it! I use it all the time and there’s no sign of wear and tear. I prefer it more than the disco (was also looking into that at the time)...but I feel like the loulou has a more interesting shape, it’s less common on the streets, and I prefer the magnetic closure over a zipper.

I tend to prefer shw on bags since it looks edgier and goes with my style more.
