I've heard that this bag is losing popularity. Is this actually true and if so, what is the reason for this? I really like the bag but want to invest in something that won't date.

Try YSL. It's the hottest thing right now, and not as expensive as Chanel. But still expensive, but the bags are beautiful. All the designs are beautiful.

I don't know the cause of Gucci Marmont line losing popularity, but it just declined. The bags I see just look dated. Don't know why. Gucci always loses popularity. I thought YSL would be the same, but so far in the last few years, it's only increased in price and more and more ppl wear carry them.

I have just sold my mini flap Marmont. I didn't feel it was dated (or if i did, I didn't really care). I do feel it is a bag that can look tatty quickly and I am very low maintenance with bags and do not want any hassle in terms of carrying it, getting in it, and looking after it. My Marmont was fine for getting in it and carrying it (although a little awkward to just kind of grab it at times) but I was always worried about scrapping it past a wall or something and I had to be careful that the GG logo didn't risk getting scratched. Ultimately that was the reason for me not keeping it. I much prefer my LV PM. I personally don't think the Marmont is on its way out yet but I'm no expert!

I have and love my medium Marmont in dusty rose. I think the color is neutral enough not to look dated and the hardware goes well with the shade. I do think if I had the black (or red that I originally wanted), it would look dated/too flashy with my wardrobe.

It's hard to say. It was very very popular when it was released in 2016. The design was clean and simple but significant enough that it was recognizably Gucci. It was also a very practical design for the most part, as their belts, flap bags, and camera bags were their top sellers. Also, the price point was relatively decent.

It was very popular across a wide range of clients, young and older. But maybe too popular.... :-s It was in every single IG post, every YouTube review, and almost everyone either had it or knew someone who had it. I saw it A LOT. Not just in shopping malls, but on the street, in grocery stores, by the beach, etc.
At the end of the day, it sort of oversaturated the market and I think people just got tired of it. It's interesting because wasn't really a fad or the kind of item that was very hyped up for just a season or two and no one saw it again. It had a really good run tbh, probably a strong first 3 years and later a decent 1-2 years. It really started dying out at the end of 2019 though. And I think the pandemic really just ended its lifespan a bit early (like it did with so many things). Now that we are kind of "after" the pandemic, I think it has almost become a new era and therefore, people no longer are as interested into various things compared to pre-pandemic.

Not saying that the Marmont line is "old". Honestly, taking a step back in the history and timeline of luxury goods, it's still a young design. It just may have been a bit over done. It's kind of like hearing a hit song on the radio getting over played and then you're sick of it even though it is a good song.

Just my rambling thoughts though. :P

I’m glad I opted for the YSL over the Marmont but only because back then the hardware was gold and I prefer silver.

I find most bags end up dated but only because of fast fashion. I quite like using older styles that have been and gone. I do get fed up with buying a bag I like then reading somewhere that it’s so passé now  I still use those bags as I don’t care about being on trend.

I think the Marmont is a really good handbag for everyday and it’ll get a lot of use, but if you want one now I’d definitely go through the pre-loved route instead of buying new. I’ve seen a lot of them on preloved sites and I’m sure you can get one in excellent condition for a significant discount off RRP!
If your goal is to have a bag more on trend, then as people have mentioned already YSL seems like a good choice right now!

Thanks for the replies. How is YSL more popular when it was launched around the same time? How do we know if this will be an iconic bag?

Ahh... if only we knew how to predict trends! I bought a YSL Niki earlier this year because it was edgy looking, practical and understated. I wanted something that clearly was a designer brand, but wasn't as in your face as LV and quite possibly Gucci. Who knows how YSL will be viewed in a few years though? My bet is that Fendi will have its big moment in the sun again.

Personally, if you love it, get it!

Here's the thing...between how quickly fashion houses are pushing trends (and past decades), influencers, TikTok, etc., the cycle is moving much faster than it used to. But things are also coming back in fashion after being out of fashion much faster. It's best to buy what you love, and then you will want to carry it no matter what others are carrying.

Personally (and this really might just be me), for the most part, bags without obvious logos are more timeless and look less dated regardless of trends. Of course, they also tend to have a lower resale value (if that is important to you).
