They said this is “normal for a pressed leather.” Should I press further or is it better to take this to a corporate contact?
Escalate. If you started talking to them less than a year in it should be covered by the guarantee.
I have at least 3 Gucci bags of pressed leather (all horse-bits) and none have done that. 2 are coming up to 20 y o.

Got an answer, @papertiger - they're taking my bag, and will "recondition the leather as best as possible." Does that seem right to you?
It could be, no one knows more bout leather than Gucci IMO. Let's see what happens and take it from there,
