Gucci Belt exchange with detached tag?

I received a Gucci belt as a bday gift and it is sadly a tad bit big. I just want to change the size and do an exchange, not a return. The problem is that in the process of trying it on, I detached the tag. The receipt says original tags must be attached, but I don’t know how strict Gucci is about this. I have the original receipt and the belt is in its original condition.

Also, my friends bought the gift in another city...has anyone successfully shipped an item back to the store for an exchange? Any help/advice would be great, thank you!
