My husband and I are buying a house and in the kitchen there are granite counters. Up until now I have not had granite and I've been wondering the best way to clean them. Normally I love 409 and use it daily in the kitchen, keeping my counters perfectly clean. I have been reading about caring for granite and already know that I cannot use my beloved 409 or even Windex on the granite since these cleaners can dull the surface and even cause pitting. I did read that hot water, or hot soapy water is best. I also read that a spray bottle with 1/4 cup of isopropyl alcohol, couple drops of dishsoap, and the rest water is a good cleaning solution and helps keep the counters clean. I wasn't sure if this is correct or if there is something else out there I can use.

I'm wondering what everyone else out there with granite counters uses to clean them and keep them shiny and beautiful? My husband likes to cook and leaves messy counters. Normally I can spray 409 and leave on for a few minutes, wipe away and everything looks beautiful. Is there something else out there that works the same way on granite? I attached a picture...the counters have a shiny surface and are sort of golden brown in color.

Thanks for any help!

good question i've been needing the know the answer to this myself. the place my fiance and i are going to be moving into has granite countertops in the bathroom. He and i have never had them before so neither of us know how to clean them. Glad to have found this thread.

i have granite counter and i just use soapy water to clean it, i do use one of those microfiber cloth. Congrats on the new house! :flowers:

Thanks m-s-m-d!

Designer Love, I'm still reading around and did find a product called Sprayway. I saw it is sold at Sam's Club (best deal) as well as other stores. I saw it listed on this site:

I looked it up and saw other people have vouched for it on sites like epinions.

I also saw that there is a non-vinegar Windex...not sure about that one.

I'll keep hunting around.

The best that I have used is from Home Depot... do remember to seal your granite countertops well, very important besides the normal maintenance... sealing provides the core protection that fill in the porous surfaces of these rock surface so when there is a spill, it stays on the surface... makes cleaning much easier.

Oh and remember to use a barrier like a hot pad / wood chop block for between your crock ware or fry daddy ... extreme exposure of high heat can damage/weaken stone surfaces causing easy fractures and cracks as well.

When in question. google is all u need!

Good luck!

I use whatever I have as well. I dont get too anal or cautious about my counters. I usually have Lysol spray or some similar cleaner. Once I clean up the main mess with that, I'll use the granite spray with paper towels as a final shine and get rid of the water streaks buff, but thats about it. The granite is usually thick enough that you arent going to really harm it unless you go to extremes.
