Graduation gift to myself: Looking for *the* professional bag in your opinion...

Come May 2010, I'll be wrapping up my doctorate (after a painfully protracted lifetime in grad school). I'll want to celebrate with my grandest gift to myself -- ever.

I can't go too nuts, but I'm looking for your suggestions for how to best spend ~$1500 on a spectacular bag. I'll need it large enough to carry documents, and not too trendy (not heavily studded, etc). It will be the bag I carry into my new professional phase... and will have to handle everyday wear.

I'm hard on bags and usually only splurge on one designer bag every year or two. I'm more of a J.Crew/Theory kind-of-gal -- so the bag has to fit a more casual look.

You all are the experts. I just have a passion for lovely things.

Thanks!

How about the LV Totally in Monogram or the Neverfull MM in Damier. The neverfull is open top though

Givenchy Nightgale - this is my graduation gift for next year I hope. I feel this bag can really be professional and classic. it's a little over $1500 but I think its so worth it.

first, all of your suggestions were really great. i'm impressed what folks on this forum know! i find one or two designers i like, and fail to really cast about it.

here are my favorites from your great suggestions:

Mulberry Baywater

Givenchy Nightingdale

Gucci Sukey Cuccissima

And when I found the one below.... well, it was love at first sight. It doesn't seem to be carried many places though.

Anyone know the story on it?

I have no info on the Prada - but it's an absolute beauty, excellent for the specs you provided.

I have 2 Pradas (both green?) and I think they are both wonderful. My only quibble is the inside material seems to give out on the seams eventually. BOTH mine have that issue under the the inside zip and I don't think I'm that hard with them.
