Thanks for posting. Interesting article.
I wonder how we should measure the success of a brand?
Is it a sales revenue figure? Is it what fashion editors say?
Is it how many celebrities carry it or how many influencers post
about it?

Dooney is a privately owned company. We really don't know
how financially successful they are. Many other handbag lines have
be acquired by larger companies and are much bigger. Are they more
successful? By what measure?

I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
I've been a Dooney leather handbag fan for over 30 years...
I still think the leather and the construction quality are superior
to many other brands, at similar or much higher price points.

Most brands on the market have multiple lines and a range of
price points and quality. Maybe Dooney would have a better image
if they had branded the canvas and novelty handbags under a
different name? Unless you are a collector you don't know that the AWL,
Florentine and Alto lines are head and shoulders above other
collections. and brands. Maybe the old money country club set just doesn't
generate enough revenue? High quality handbags that last
a long time don't need to be replaced very often.

As a side note, I think the closing of the Dooney retail boutiques
had a very negative effect on the brand image. If your handbags are
not available in your own exclusive stores and top tier department stores,
how can it maintain a high end image?

I enjoyed the read but don’t necessarily agree that the trendy bags were the downfall of Dooney nor am I sure they had a big downfall. I had a multicolor DB It bag back in 2005. It was very pretty and not as bright as the LV print. I believe it was $195 when I got mine. I wasn’t a fan of the some of the whimsical prints but didn’t mind them. I think at some point in time the contemporary market as a whole got over saturated with trendy bags. I was more into Coach bags for awhile and then on a fall day in 2014 I turned on QVC and watched Sue Clifton present a Dooney Florentine bag. I ordered one that day. Almost 10 years later I still love and appreciate this line. I would say as a whole they are doing well with their leather bags (I have no idea about their numbers). I do see quite a few Dooney bags out and about. A few weeks ago I saw a lady leaving the grocery store with a large Florentine Flynn in black and it looked beautiful! Next I saw a pebbled leather Barlow sitting on the bar at a restaurant. It looked a bit slouchy and also a great looking bag. I see Dooneys fairly often on both younger and older ladies.
I didn’t realize the retail stores closed. I notice they aren’t in my local Macy’s anymore but they are in our Boscovs.

I think that we see more Dooney handbags in the northeast. The company is headquartered in Norwalk Ct and the early style inspirations have been clearly
from that area.... equestrian and boating/sailing. Is that the old money/country club
inspiration? There were multiple Dooney boutiques in the northeast in the early days.
I know they have branched out over time and tried to widen the appeal of the styles and
brand.

I enjoyed this article. I am in Chicago and I see many Dooneys, vintage and new in the wild here. Dooney has always been popular here along with Coach. The quality of Dooney Florentine leather, it’s all I have, is definitely worth more than I paid. It will last for years like the vintage coach bags I still have from the 80’s. I love it when I see a Dooney in the wild.

Glad to know that Dooney bags are out and about and popular across the country.

I had bought quite some DB bags till I moved to other luxury brands. DB’s quality is very good for items retails under $150, excellent for retails over $300 such as Florentine line and some Disney x Dooney ones. I used to buy Disney X Dooney frequently. Currently still owns 1 Disney x Dooeny and 1 Florentine satchel I bought before covid, the leather and hardware on the Florentine are totally worth the money and the craftsmanship is excellent too. Hopefully DB maintain same quality, it’s more difficult now for companies doing so and not raise prices significantly, everything becomes much more expensive including labor.
