Thanks for posting. Interesting article.
I wonder how we should measure the success of a brand?
Is it a sales revenue figure? Is it what fashion editors say?
Is it how many celebrities carry it or how many influencers post
about it?
Dooney is a privately owned company. We really don't know
how financially successful they are. Many other handbag lines have
be acquired by larger companies and are much bigger. Are they more
successful? By what measure?
I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
I've been a Dooney leather handbag fan for over 30 years...
I still think the leather and the construction quality are superior
to many other brands, at similar or much higher price points.
Most brands on the market have multiple lines and a range of
price points and quality. Maybe Dooney would have a better image
if they had branded the canvas and novelty handbags under a
different name? Unless you are a collector you don't know that the AWL,
Florentine and Alto lines are head and shoulders above other
collections. and brands. Maybe the old money country club set just doesn't
generate enough revenue? High quality handbags that last
a long time don't need to be replaced very often.
As a side note, I think the closing of the Dooney retail boutiques
had a very negative effect on the brand image. If your handbags are
not available in your own exclusive stores and top tier department stores,
how can it maintain a high end image?
