Michael Kors Gold plated padlock & Key for large Hamilton Tote

I paid several hundred dollars for my large & beautifully made leather Hamilton Tote. This is the second set of hardware replaced, specifically the gold plated padlock & key. I take great care of my bags and this hardware tarnishesd almost immediately both times. I don't even carry this bag daily. Does anyone have any ideas how to prevent the tarnishing on these expensive bags? This will be my last replacement. There's nothing worse than a beautiful leather bag and tarnished hardware that cheapens this lovely leather. Help!
