I have been looking to upgrade my pear shaped engagement ring, but the GIA ratings for the stones that I have looked at do not have a cut quality grade for pear shaped stones. I'm confused, because sites like Blue Nile do give cut ratings for their pear shaped stones, so I want to make sure this is correct.

I have my eye on a gorgeous ring with two rows of diamonds surrounding the pear stone (1.13 carats), and I may trade my current stone in for the existing stone in the ring. The center stone is 1.26 carats, D color and S1 clarity, and the surrounding stones are also D quality as well. Polish and symmetry are listed as good, but there is no cut quality rating. My current stone just didn't look right with the surroundiing stones, so I think I may just go for it, because the ring is just gorgeous. The ring looks about 3 carats with all of the sparkle of the surrounding stones.

Does this sound right to the experts? Thanks for your help.

No, they do not cut grade pear shapes. It is impossible to buy a pear shape based on percentages and angles alone. The biggest factor the cert will not tell you is how slight or obvious the "bow tie" effect is on the pear shape. Ie. Bow tie effect is the dark area of shading in the center of the pear that looks like a bow tie. This effect always exists on this shape, but how slight or obvious it is varies from stone to stone, and would be one of my biggest considerations in buying.
PS. The biggest tell-tale of nicely cut pear is going to be price. The less expensive stones on the list are probably priced less for a reason..

Thanks for the help. It has been many years since I purchased a diamond, and I just wanted to make sure that I was getting the correct information. The bow tie effect on this stone is minimal, so I'm okay with that.

How does Blue Nile give a cut rating for pear shaped stones? I compared the stone in the ring to a similar stone on Blue Nile, and the price was very close, except Blue Nile also gave a cut rating, so that's what got me concerned.

i also have a pear GIA certified stone and they don't do cut grading for this shape. google pricescope and if i can remember it correctly there is an interactive thing that you can do that gives you a cut rating but you do need to know the measurements of the stone. goodluck! i love my pear....

well there is a cut grade, this mainly applies to how deep, shallow, what the spread is liek etc.. it smore the symetry measurement and grade that will indicate what shape it is... and that is personal..

interesting, because i just got my appraisal back for my pear e-ring and the gemologist did place a cut rating on it. but since she had the dimensions, is this possible? now i am confused because she puts this cut rating in my appraisal, so is it not accurate? is this something only done recently perhaps?

now i'm really lost.
