Are all GIA diamonds laser inscribed? Reading about this switching out diamonds has made me paranoid. I know the jeweler I went to is well trusted but you never know. I am pretty sure however on my GIA report that we have a laser inscription number meaning we would be able to verify that it hadnt been switched.

Not all of them are. I think it is at an additional cost when it's graded and not all cutters pay for that. According to the site, it is done with the dossier. I thought for sure they were going to start doing it to all stones.

Upon request, a diamond can be microscopically inscribed on its girdle with its unique GIA Report Number (referred to as the GIA Inscription Registry), a personal message, or any other text, symbols or logos. The GIA Inscription Registry is included with the Diamond Dossier® service and all synthetic diamond report services. A laser inscription allows for easy identification of a diamond, a way to personalize the diamond, or serves as a form of branding for the diamond manufacturer or retailer.

It's VERY VERY VERY important that you get yourself a strong loupe and learn where your inclusions are in your stone and check the girdle for an inscription. It's also important that when you take you ring somewhere for any work that you and the jeweler both inspect the stone before and after the work and agree 100% that the stone is the same as the one you have the report for both times.

Well I would definitely like to get myself a loupe then. I have never brought my ring to any other jeweler then the one we bought it from, but if I do have a laser inscription number do you think just as long as I check this and it matches up with the number on my GIA report, that I can feel safe?

It is an extra charge. I believe it is $12 to get a diamond laser inscribed when done at the same time as the report. BTW, anyone can send their diamond into GIA. You do not have to be a jeweler. I would call them and ask if you already have the report, can you just send it in for inscription and find out what the fee is.

I would totally feel at ease with a laser inscribed diamond, it is much harder if not impossible to do a switch. They would have to get a diamond similar to yours and then inscribe it, it is a lot of work for a switch. At least this is what I think.

I hope this is the case that we would not have to worry about it being switched if it is laser inscribed. Does anyone know how easy hard it is to identify the GIA number using a loupe on your own? Or do you think I would need a jewelers assistance?

If its not already inscribed you can get it inscribed. It will match if its the same stone. But if you loupe your stone and learn the plot from your cert and from viewing the s tone, youll know your stones inclusions in the event that the inscription fades over time or you don't have one.

I think you should do exactly this. You don't need to have a jeweler do it, or at least you didn't have to. But the stone has to be sent in unset. It cannot already be in a ring, if it is it has to be removed from the ring and sent without the ring, and then reset when it's returned. That WILL require a jeweler.

I carry a 30x loupe with me. I can identify mine with that easily. I stand by a window during a bright day and that is how I see it the best. I also made sure it was not covered by any prongs when the stone was set.

It's worth it to have GIA inscribe the report or dossier number on the stone. I don't think it's worth it for a cutesy message tho.

You can get a 30x loupe from Widget Supply and a few other online sites. I get mine from Widget Supply bec the one I get has a little leather case. I have one at home, one in my purse.

Hmm I do have a laser registry number now just want to make sure it matches up. I will order a loupe but do you think if I brought it to a local jeweler and asked them to help me identify the number they would? Sorry for all the questions, once I get some worry in my head its hard to get it out! lol

Yea you can ask them if they can put it under the microscope and help you confirm its your stone. You can say you sent it for service and you wanted to double check.

Dont stress yourself out. If you saw it when you first got it and it looks the same to you it's probably the same. Now days it is far too much hassle for a jeweler to do that, and it is way too easy to catch them

I don't mean to highjack, but "HI Ame" thanks for recommending Summa Jewelers. He's higher priced but trustworthy I believe (I have issues with that).

On the stone, I think a jeweler would be far less likely to ever switch a stone with the inscription as it's just even more likely he's get caught. Plus they know you have measures in place to be able to identify your diamond. I'm sure everything is fine :-)

HIYA!!! Long time no see! Yea I like Jim a lot. He's really good. He is one of the few benchies that actually knows diamonds and knows what a well cut diamond should be. When Paul and John from Infinity come in town, you need to go to one of those meet the cutter events. It's fun!
