I purchased the large YG frivole earring at the end of August. I loved them and wore them often until the back of one of the earring broke a few weeks ago. I brought them to Van Cleef who told me that the backs were screw on and they were going to charge me to fix the broken back! They recommended I get the backs permanently set oppose to screw on which is another $185.

I am honestly disappointed with the brand. I wore them for less than 2 months and they want to charge me? She said they offer free service to have the backs permanently set for the Alahambra collection but not frivole.

Has anyone else had this issue?

I had the same thing happen to pave frivole and they did permanently attached the back, no charge. It was a few years ago. The policy might have changed, I heard that they charge for Alhambra as well now, you could ask if management team can accommodate this for you.

My brand new VA Blue Agate earrings are having the posts switched out to the longer version, tension adjusted and soldered and cost is $205. My understanding per the store mngr is that the cost covers the different post (not the soldering nor the tension adjusted).

My pave frivoles had one earring post become loose/wiggly twice. I feared losing it so I had them solder the posts in place. So far, they seem secure and comfy. I have sensitive ears and any pressure will cause discomfort.

I purchased them this year and they have been in for service 5 times! First to loosen clip tension and change to longer posts, then to adjust clip tension two more times, then to tighten the loose/wiggly post, then finally to solder posts in place. I am in the US and all services have been at no charge. I have learned these beauties are delicate and to handle with care. They are a favorite of mine and look stunning and I wear them on the regular!

I have not had a back break. One of my frivoles the post kept coming out and I was afraid I was going to loose them. But Vca seemed to have screwed them in better when they went to work shop for diamond replacement. I have had no issues with other pairs I have worn and had for many years. I might eventually pay for them to be permanently secured, especially if I had one broke off like you.
Regarding cost, I have learned your store can waive any repair costs if they want to. For something like this Vca should for sure pay. It really annoys me they nickel and dime customers with things that are clearly defects. Try speaking to your sales associate and store manager about this. Explain that this is clearly a defect and if they think you did it then they need to design the posts better or permanently attach. If they still charge you then I personally would switch SA/stores. I have 2 Vca stores I will not shop at due to poor service like this. I also have an airline I refuse to use after poor service. I go out of my way to fly with someone else, including for work! I am very loyal and forgiving if overall service is great otherwise a place is dead to me.
No need to be like me and you can simply pay repair and move on swiftly. Either way don’t let this impact your love for the earrings!

Here is my experience over the years, I think, I think since last year, they charge $180 for sodering no matter when you buy. One of my MOP VA earrings post broken a few years back, they charged me $180 to fix it. and earlier this year, one the post broken again, I paid $180 to fix it (not sure if it's the same side though).
I bought a pair of MA earrings earlier this year, asked my SA if they could soder the posts when shipping from paris and she said they will charge $180, and I didn't do it.
But they don't charge adjusting tension or position.

I had the same issue, only wore twice (bought 4 mths).. my sales told me VCA actually got a lot clients with this issues and yes they did ask clients to pay for it which I think it is very ridiculous. I think the design is flawed but they want customer to pay for VCA's mistake. If just one person it might be an exception but this keeps happening, then they should be responsible for their poor design.

I also had the same issue with my small Frivole earrings. One of the earrings fell off my ear. Luckily I was home and found the post after frantically searching for it. I was extremely disappointed to say the least. It is most definitely a design flaw. For such a high end brand, this should not be happening. The manager of the store said the earrings are versatile and that is why the post is adjustable. This makes no sense when there is a risk of losing/damaging the earrings.

I was going to buy the large Frivole earrings but after my negative experience mentioned above, I don’t think I will. Sad because I think they are beautiful.

You can get the posts permanently soldered and then the problem won’t happen again. I got my Frivoles soldered and the problem went away.

Update: picked my earrings up at VCA yesterday and there was no charge!

Hello! Do you recommend lengthening the post? One SA I spoke with did not recommend it because she said it’s more likely that the French clip will hit it and break the post. She also said that when it is lengthened, the earring may droop downwards on the ear. My earlobe is thin enough to keep the regular size post but I feel like it would be easier/more comfortable to wear with a longer post. How has your experience been?

I had the posts lengthened because the regular ones were not really long enough to comfortably go thru my earlobes. I guess I have thick earlobes! I am not at all concerned about the French clip hitting and breaking the post, they have ample clearance. The longer posts are quite long, so I would only change to them if your earlobes are thicker like mine.
