when my dh and I were in an island and I was eyeing a south sea pearl bracelet. I noticed it was way more expensive than the Fw pearl. My husband ask me then how can you tell if its south sea or fresh water pearl? This got me thinking as well. So i didnt purchase the bracelet much as i like it. Im contented with a few collection though I would have wanted one from that island.

Salt water Akoya, South Sea, & Tahitians all have a more luminous luster than FW pearls. While FW pearls are genuine pearls & are nice, you just can's beat salt water pearls, especially SS, for their luster & their thickness of nacre. FW pearls are formed in mussels as opposed to salt water pearls formed in oysters. I have FW, Akoya, SS, & Tahitians. They all have their place in jewelry style & I wear different type pearls depending on the outfit & occasion. I tend to wear my FW more casually than my more expensive pearls. It's always a good rule of thumb when purchasing pearls to buy the best quality pearl that you can afford. Pearls will last a lifetime & become heirlooms when their taken care of properly.
