Hi All:
I am looking for a bag to use when traveling by train in the winter. Something that will fit what a carry-on on wheels would. In the fall, spring and summer, I travel with a bag on wheels, but in the winter, there is a lot of snow and slush on the ground and I don't want to deal with that; hence, a shoulder or hand-held bag is preferable. I travel between my city of employment and my home-town every 4-6 weeks for about a one or two week period, so this would not be used everyday. Also, size restrictions are not really an issue on the train.

Is a better option the XL travel bag without a strap or the expandable with a strap? The stuff that I take is not that heavy and I like the horizontal shape of the XL better than the vertical of the expandable (when it is expanded). Also, the expandable is almost twice the price of the XL. The only thing that I like about the expandable is the fact that it has a strap. - If the XL were available with a strap, I would buy it right away and not have any dilemma.

I like to use the XL travel bag for weekend car trips. But IMO it is too heavy when full for train trips where you need to carry it around the station, onto the train, to a cab etc.

The L expandable is nice because it has the strap, but it looks ridiculous when actually expanded IMO. I used to own one but never unzipped it to expand it.

Perhaps I’m too high maintenance lol  but I really couldn’t fit 1-2 weeks worth of stuff into either of them!

I actually prefer my LC Expandable because of the comfortable adjustable strap (though like @Cosmopolitan I prefer not to unzip and expand it). I find that it does fit quite a lot when not expanded. I have several LC extra large travel bags with no strap which I have used when traveling often. Sometimes they are heavy depending on how much I’m carrying which doesn’t bother me for short periods of time I’m carrying it at the airport. Think about what you actually plan to carry in it, maybe it might not be too heavy. However, for ease of use, comfort, and when you need hands free, the Expandable with the strap works great!

I much prefer the XL travel bag I have three different colors which I alternate by the season when traveling by car. If you say you don't have heavy items it will be fine Know people who have the expandable and don't expand it because it looks ridiculous and is not comfortable I also have this in the large size when carrying less

Thanks! I will go for the XL. I don’t actually carry that much because I live out of two homes, so I have what I need in both locations. The Expandable is almost twice the price. Not worth it since I have other travel bags.

That would be my choice, I have it in three colours and it is a lovely sleek bag. I also carry it inside my suede east-west Mulberry Bayswater weekender, which has more structure so I like it for travelling a lot, but in the case of the rain I stuff Mulberry inside the Longchamp, perfect fit, but sometimes I do need both and it is great to have it.

I purchased the Longchamp XL - short handle - bag in the club gunmetal version - with yellow jockey. They retail for $235 CAD now, but Nordstrom still had $200 on the tag, so they sold it to me at that price. The expandable version with the strap is close to $400 CAD after taxes. If I ever find it at one of the Canadian versions of TJMax, I may get it, if the price is reasonable, but for the time being, this one will be great. I do have proper luggage on wheels for air travel, but just wanted something for times when I am using means of transportation where space is tight (our train travel was stopped for an entire month because of protests, and I had to go by bus several times).

I also have the Club travel bag in gunmetal and I love it too! Actually, I love all of my LC Travel Bags and I have about seven of them (only three with straps). :P Enjoy your new bag!!!

I’m revisiting this thread, as I determined today that I had in fact purchased a L travel bag last year and not an XL, as I had assumed. It’s very spacious, so I was surprised that it’s actually the L. I was researching the expandable version last night and discovered that I was wrong about the other size.

I’m looking into getting the expandable version this year. Any opinions on this bag?
