Okay for my mom I would definitely say that her life changed a lot after finally getting a full-length Fox fur coat for Christmas in 1986. Living in Chicago in the 1980s a full-length fox fur coat was the most coveted thing a woman could own. My mom used to beg my dad for one like crazy and would constantly leave out newspaper clippings from fur coat stores. She would also go into fur coat stores and try on different fur coats. Now as I also mentioned before my Aunt got a full-length fox fur coat and once my mom tried it on she spent the whole year complaining to my dad about not owning one and would complain about how she saw women wearing them on the street and how when she went out to events she was often the only woman without a full-length fox fur coat. I remember when she finally got her full-length golden Island fox fur coat back in 1986 for Christmas I remember her going crazy with excitement and she would wear that coat wherever she went.

I live in Canada and my mother had several fur coats.
She never had to beg my father for one, but I had to beg her to let me wear one of hers.
She only agreed if I was going somewhere special, or it was bitter cold and I had to take public transportation.
I started wearing her furs for the first time when I had to take a bus to college, and it was a fair walk to the bus stop.

Nice did she own a full length Fox fur coat.

My mother just bought her own (full-length, dark ranch mink).

I know what you mean though, if you look at 1970s/'80s copies of Vogue, the fur coat adverts go on for pages and pages. It was definitely a part of the dream lifestyle.
Ya before my mom got her fur coat she would torture herself looking at the images of women wearing fur coats in the advertisements.

In the seventies and eighties, the NYT used to have box ads for Chanel, Tiffany, VCA, mikamoto, and also for fur. My mom would clip them out and expect me to ’convey’ what she wanted for the holidays (Fur coats, strands of pearls, that kind of stuff). My step father and I would spend a day shopping for her ‘surprise.’ Also, since high school, I’ve been roughly her size, so I could also try things on. . . Lunch at the old PJ Clarkes with burgers and home fries on paper plates was part of the shopping for mom ritual. And, then she could act surprised when she got her present lol. Those were also the days of eighties power restaurants, so pre or post holiday dinners at the quilted giraffe, lutece, the original le cirque, or A American Place would be part of it. So, while she didn’t exactly nag, she made her wishes known :P

ETA: @shopaholicandshoelover75, no one ever asked to try my moms coats on, but I do remember that decade, NY, UES, as being packed with women who wore a style combo of the Preppy Handbook, long black mink coat, Chanel bag

Nice I remember how much my mom used to tell my dad about all the other women wearing fur and not her. I also remember back in 1985 watching a 101 Dalmatians on TV and my mom said how much she hated the movie and my brother said “You’re just jealous Cruella has a fur coat and you don’t.”

Her first was a black Hudson Seal (which is Muskrat) and 2nd a sheared beaver (the one I wore on the cold days to college), finally a full length dark ranch mink.
Okay cool my mom only liked Fox. Now do you ever remember women asking to try on you’re moms coat. I remember back in 1987 we went out to eat as a family and like 15 women came out and asked to try on my moms Golden Island Fox.

Did you’re mom own a full length Fox?

Sadly no. She had mink in different lengths (lond, stroller, jacket ) and chinchilla.
Oh wow ya once my mom got a full length golden island Fox fur coat she became addicted to it. Did your mom freak out when she got her first fur coat.

We lived in NY and MI so my mom and grandmothers always wore fur coats in winter. My mom didn't like full length minks because she was 5'2" and a size 4 so she said they were too heavy. She only had coats that were knee length. A few times she brought in older coats and had them remade into something else. She also had a cute fox jacket that she wore to run errands.

I no longer live in MI so decades ago I did buy a full length mink to wear when I went to visit family. It was the best choice because I got so cold otherwise since I wasn't used to those low temperatures.

I don't recall anyone ever asking me to try on my moms coats.
In Canada fur coats (unless they were top of the line mink in rare colours, or sable) were not that big a deal, and many ordinary women owned them.
I even had friends in high school with fur coats, and rabbit coats were dead cheap, so anyone with a minimum wage part time job could buy one.
My first fur was a fox jacket that was strips of fox with leather strips sewn between. You couldn't see the leather strips, only the fur. This jacket was $700.00 Canadian back in about 1982.

Omg, my mother had Muskrat and I’m pretty sure beaver too!

I remember walking around Philadelphia when I was kid and seeing women in full length Minks with matching fur headbands (like the halos, not hats) and thinking it was the chicest thing ever!

My mother wanted a mink stole. This was in the 1960s when fashionable ladies wore mink stoles over their wool suits that they wore to afternoon teas with other similarly dressed ladies. My mom had me pestering my dad to buy one for her. In fact she had me draw crayon pictures of her wearing a mink stole to give to my dad.

Eventually, when my dad's boss was retiring and planning to move to Florida, my parents were invited to their house, where Mrs. Boss had a whole closet full of mink coats and stoles which she obviously wouldn't need in Florida. Alas, Mrs. Boss was a very tall, large woman and my mom was only 4'10". After some negotiation my dad bought her a mink stole and was recommended to a furrier who could cut it down to size.

I don't think my mom wore the stole more than once or twice because she was not a woman invited to afternoon teas and by then fashion was moving on. I have the stole hanging in my office closet. It's still beautiful. I wish I knew of an event where I could wear it.

Come to the South, it goes with everything like a nice handbag lol
