Travel flying into gatwick?

I am flying into Gatwick airport in London for the first time next week and I was wondering is it somewhat set up like Heathrow?

For example, being a US Citizen do I land, go through immigrations, collect my luggage then meet my friends waiting?

It was just a thought lol

You collect your luggage before you meet your friends. And, unlike Heathrow, the baggage system works.

Gatwick is a great airport I always try and fly in and out of their, far better then Heathrow.
