Hey, I want to buy a chanel flap bag medium as investment but I need some more information. I want to know, when the production for the bag ended and for example how many flap bags exist. If you have any information, please respond:Liebe:

Chanel Flap bags are mass produced. They are NOT investments. While the cost of a new bag will go up over time, I would never ever recommend using any handbag as an investment.
thanks for your reply but why do you think a handbag isn´t a Investment? If the prices go up they will be worth more than before. the flap bag for example was 190$ before now it is worth about 4000.

Not sure this is the time to buy these to make money off them. A few years ago maybe now not so much. Medium now over £5k here in the UK. Doubtful secondhand anyone will be willing to pay more than that even in a few years. The market for these is saturated lots of them around on eBay and with resellers. Also with what the world is going through at the moment most people are being that much more careful with spending. This of course is my personal opinion. Bags shd never be considered as investments anyways as previous poster said.

Yes, but the price at which you sell, net of fees, will be a lot lower. Unless you are an influencer selling to your followers, most likely you’ll have to sell through a consignment store or online marketplace where often times they take up to 30% commission. Chanel prices have gone up a lot in recent years but that’s no guarantee they can continue to go up that much in the future.

I disagree with some of the comments. I have always made money on selling my classic flaps, as I’ve sold them a few years after purchase for more than I paid for them (but less than current retail price). They weren’t purchased as investments or with re-selling in mind, however I have always made money on them, due to the regular prices increases. I’ve recently sold a classic flap and a boy bag so I think people are still willing to spend money on second hand bags even in the current climate.

I see where you are coming from. I got my jumbos in 2015 for £3.5k (more than people who have been collecting for years I know) extortionate at the time I thought. If I sell now I will likely make money.

What I meant in my earlier post is personally I think there will be a limit to what people are willing to pay eventually right? To make money on £5k will be that much more difficult. With a slew on people bemoaning quality and going to other brands I am not sure the market for these bags second hand will remain strong. I could however be very wrong. To be honest I hope I am, as it means I may make more from mine if I decide to sell.

It also depends on your investment aim..are you looking for financial investment or specifically a handbag investment?

I think as a “handbag investment” it holds true (for now) that coveted classic styles of 2-3 brands like Chanel can sell very well especially if you can sell direct without some middle entity taking a cut.
That said post 2014 the rise in price when calculated over time isn’t as steep anymore. A look at last 5 years:
A m/l flap was $4900 ( ~5200+ w tax) in the US in 2015 and is 6500 now. If you’re looking to make a luxury handbag purchase anyway then Chanel certainly wins out over most brands for value over time.

However if one is looking at this as a general investment strategy, the stock market will likely win out. So if one is just deciding to invest money for financial gain then I would think it is better to invest $5-6k in the standard S&P 500 versus any handbag. By comparison $5000 in the SPY index in 2015 would be worth atleast $7500 now or a 50% gain. It also provides for immediate liquidity.

A flap might have cost $190, but that was also in a time were breads costs pennies and rent and pay were not even hundreds of dollars. A lot of people call a bag an investment. That they can always recoup that money if they want to sell. During corona there were a lot of people who lost their jobs and needed money. Because the world is so uncertain the bags don't sell as well, they don't sell direct, the mark is flooded. There is a big difference in calling a bag an investment or actually treat it as one.

First rule of investing is always that it should be done with left over money. If you can't afford to lose it all, don't do it. It will always be a gamble. If you want to know more about bags as an investment, you should watch Sophie Sohet's video's. She sometimes talks about this and gives tips about bags that are worth it. Being a reseller is more a job then an investment. I think that you should first ask yourself if you want to learn all the tricks of the trade first instead of seeing it as an opportunity to make money.
