Hi all, just got a pre-loved 2020 limited edition Cartier Santos Dumont from Fashionphile and it is beautiful. It’s not only my first luxury watch, but also my first non-quartz watch. I don’t doubt authenticity, but I’m wondering if there’s anything I should check out before deciding to keep it - like should I have it functionally checked out by Cartier? Is the Cartier watch warranty still valid even though I’m not the original owner?

Love this! Congrats! I believe that in the US, tourneau, now bucherer, and other certified dealers will service cartier watches, but I believe it takes a while and I don’t recall how much it costs.

I have no advice to give because I have no Cartier watch on jewellery. I just wanted to say, this is just gorgeous, congratulations

At least in Austria they were able to find my watch via the serial number. I inquired about checking for water resistance and a general service. I got the watch from eBay for a steal and actually wanted to check for authenticity. When they found the watch in the system they said it was only serviced the year before, so it wasn't necessary yet.

So you could bring it in and ask if they think it needs service/water resistance check. I guess they would tell you how much it costs/how long it takes. Not sure how Cartier reacts to secondary market purchases, so you either want to tell them the truth or say a relative gave it to you...

Admittedly it was many years ago, but on two separate occasions, I brought watches that I bought on eBay to Cartier and asked for written appraisals, so that I could add them to my homeowners insurance. On both occasions, Cartier looked at the watches and provided the appraisals, which I also viewed as proof of authenticity. I’m not sure if they still provide this service but it might be worth inquiring.

Adding to this, both of my Cartier watches that I bought pre-loved on eBay have been serviced over the years by Cartier. I’ve never asked about warranties but Cartier must have been aware that I was not the original owner if they checked the serial numbers. They even serviced one of the watches (the Tank Francais) for free because they were running a special.

Good to know! Was it a holiday special? I just received a Tank Louis as a gift and need to get it serviced. Can I ask how much a service would cost? It is a quartz movement.

This is a great idea - much better than just waltzing in and asking them to authenticate.
