fashion 2013 resolutions/trends & personal wardrobe goals....

I did this last year and I'm so happy that I did. I don't know why I didn't do it sooner honestly. I was spending lots of money on things like high heels that I never wore instead of something like a great fall sweater.

So many of us struggle with this I think. We were brainwashed to think its an 'investment' to buy dressy clothes for special events but we tend to feel guilty spending on real everyday items. Even just basics like really good t shirts, socks, every day shoes....

Such a great list! I love #1. Unfortunately most companies are not exactly transparent with their manufacturing practices. Here is my little contribute of the companies that are: Steven Alan, Margaret Howell, French Soles, Petit Banteau.
Thank you! I am still trying to decide what number 10 should be! there are are some great suggestions here actually so I am thinking about it. I do research my brands to make sure they are ethical and it does make a difference actually. In the UK even Starbucks was forced to clean up its act because customers were not happy with its tax affairs.

I love the clothes in my closet. I just need to lose weight to fit into them again.

I've been making good progress since I finished the holiday food. No more sweets, bread or pasta for a while. (Well, maybe one small piece of bread per day. :P) It's been pretty easy for the last week - yay.

I do need a new dark brown leather jacket. Not sure what to buy. And a black work bag with silver hardware. Haven't found one I love yet, but I did like the alma shape on me, don't want patent or logos or saffiano, though. Oh well, it will be fun to look for a while.

And maybe a new yellow gold watch. The one I want should go on sale in November. Delayed gratification.

Love this thread !
I have been making some wardrobe simplification since October last year and will probably take another 6 months before I'm there!
Post some more opinions and thoughts ladies!

Well I'm trying to lose some more weight this year, so hopefully I'll be shopping for some smaller pants! But otherwise, my resolutions are:

- create a pineterest board of everything I love so that I'm more focused when sales hit

- go ahead and buy full price when it is worth it

- only buy 1-2 items a month (not including replacements and things like underwear, lol)

- limit certain purchases, like shoes & bags, since I have plenty

- get more fun clothes for going out

- only buy things that fit into my existing wardrobe and that I can see myself wearing for at least 5 years

- and avoid crazy sale shopping! I'm so tired of buying things that I'm sick of after one season or that look worn out after one season.

- oh and more diamonds please!

Would love to hear about everyone's 2013 fashion resolutions, predictions and personal wardrobe goals....
Helps to clarify things doesn't it....

Mine at the moment:

1. Ethical fashion.research thoroughly the brands/shops I buy from. If I feel they treat animals, the environment or their employees poorly, I move on. after all its only a reflection of how they are bound to treat their customers...

good resolution! Edun is a brand known for having a sustainable, ethical business model.

mine is to get some good shoes! my feet are big (41+) and i often cant shop at the usual stores so this might require some $$ and time but it will be worth it because i find i just dont have the shoes to tie together an outfit atm.

I possibly make the same every year but here goes:

1) Wear what I have already including all those gorgeous hats

2) Repair what needs repairing and find a new trustworthy dry cleaners

3) Buy lots more black socks of all lengths (where to they go?)

4) Buy pure cotton PJs and nightdresses (even silk is too warm for Summer)

5) No more high shoes or shoe-boots - enough is enough!

6) No more coats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

7) Buy a flat mini bag ASAP (choose one and be done!)

8) No more orange or black based scarves, find purples or greens instead

9) Lay outfits out last thing at night like I used to do rather than rush in the morning

10) No more precious, wear it now cos who knows may happen and my wardrobe is not a museum

Hats ! Hats? You also love hats? So do I , over the years I've amassed a small but ridiculously chic collection so I am ready for weddings, funerals etc
Anyway working on my resolutions and wardrobe goals, I ve done a very superficial clear out and had to let go THREE coats. One was last years Zara knitted little number with a scrumptious faux fur collar, which I loved when i bought, but time has not been kind on it and it looks like its been through war and famine , the other two were over 5 years old and simply had to make space in the wardrobe. One was 100%cashmere and I struggled letting it go but I think I prefer the space.

Buy only things that I LOVE. Love the way it looks on the rack/model, love the way it looks on me, love the way it makes me feel and the image it projects. I tend to buy things that are just OK because I'm in a rush or just want something that will do in a pinch. It's better to take the time to find something perfect, since I have enough stuff already.

Obviously not including basics, it's hard to love a cami for under sheer shirts, or everyday underwear!

Neenabengal: you nailed it with this one: Reduce amount of time you spend on the internet (blogs, forums etc) lusting after clothes /the next 'must have' item you know doesn't fit your lifestyle/ is too expensive. I need to write that on my forehead!!!!

I resolve to only buy wonderful feeling natural fibers, silk, cashmere, merino, smooth cotton, and nothing that is itchy or made in a lab.
Also to stop wasting time and money trying to make clothes from trendy shops work for me, and only buy from the shops that I already love and that I know will fit me properly. Whenever I need more closet space the first things to go are always from stores I don't usually shop in, while the things that stay are always from the same places! So I need to remember works for me and stick to it!

Love this thread!

1) shop in my own closet ... all those items that i HAD TO HAVE....are languishing in the closet, unworn, tags still on...I am ashamed

2) pare down on fashion/beauty purchases. I spent enough last year to account for 2 years of my "permitted" annual shopping budget. I should have fired myself a long time ago.

3) focus is on classics ... developing a look that i am comfortable with and that i WANT to wear, be it whether it is a sweltering summer day, or a so-cold-i-don't-want-to-get-out-of-bed day....that's my problem...in winter, if i could go to work in my sweats or pjs, I would. It's too cold and depressing to want to play in the closet.

4) getting rid of stuff that i should be getting rid of...i fell into the whole juicy sweatsuits trend (oh gosh...was it really 5 years ago?? i feel so old now) and i have a lot of those sitting in the closet....the pants i still wear, but do feel like a slob in them, which will ultimately make me feel even more depressed that i already am in the winter...and do i really need 10 sets of it? i don't even want to know how many unmatched items i have. I wonder if there is a market for them?

5) if i have (hah..WANT is a better word) to buy stuff, at least buy those that i know i will wear, and will make me happy. I.e. pjs...i've been wearing mismatched, ratty ones for majority of my life. or some random free oversized tshirts that make me feel as attractive as something the dog dragged in. I finally bought actual pj sets and they make me so HAPPY to wear them.

First up, props ladysarah, awesome thread idea and so timely!!

I have been thinking over the New Year break about how the past 3 years have been quite hard and stressful for lots of reasons and in almost every area of my life - family, work, relationship. It seems like life just got in the way and fashion, which I had always loved, became a bit of a distant memory. I stopped reading my fashion magazines and I stopped buying clothes because I felt like it was a waste of my time which was already dedicated to other things!

So this year I have had a chat to myself and reminded myself of the following: fashion is a passion of mine and has been since I was a teenager. I am allowed to have passions and to pursue them. I have lovely things and should continue to curate and edit to my aesthetic.

Finally, feeling well dressed gives me such a confidence boost and makes me feel like I can take on anything.

My resolutions are:

1. Fitness is not optional. When you are running, you feel better, sleep better and look better. Taking time out for yourself to exercise is not fivolous or indulgent, it is necessary to keep stress under control.

2. Femininity is the watchword of your working-wardrobe aesthetic. Play to your strengths.

3. Some things will never, ever suit you, so don't spend money on them. Enjoy trends on other people.

4. It's time for an update and a critical edit, taking into account how much time you spend at work, how much time you spend socialising, how much time you spend lounging at home and the seasons. Throw out things that you haven't worn/will never wear. Sell unworn items on eBay. Repair pieces that you used to wear all the time but are damaged.

5. Jeans do not translate as casual for every occasion, so give it up and buy some summer-appropriate inexpensive dresses and shorts. (*I have actually already done this and am really thrilled with what I have - dressing for the weekends is no longer impossible and I didn't have to spend a lot to do it!!)

6. Tailor the items that do not fit.

7. Spend money on items that you will use again and again and again. If it comes down to a choice between a fabulous cocktail frock on sale but still $1K+ or two pairs of shoes that you will wear 24/7, go the shoes.

8. Lust after and save for truly special items - it is allowed :graucho:

2. Bally new Clea pumps in black and camel - these will be the second pair of each of these colours in my wardrobe and will be left at the office while I wear my flats home.

3. Dresses, tops, pants and skirts. I spent last year trying to dress for work in a wardrobe that either stopped fitting or was completely worn out. It's ok to buy new things as long as you will wear them.

I did this a while back. Its so much cuter and unique. Plus its so much cooler.

Buy things that I actually NEED. I'm good about only buy things that I love, but this means I neglect the basics. Just looking at all my white t shirts and they're so gross, but I can't bring myself to spend even a little amount of money on a boring white t.

this is me. Why buy a t-shirt when I can get a fabulous blouse? Lol
