Hi, I am planning on getting a birkin 30, but is concern on on how different leather hold up over the years as well as the wear and tear on the leather.
I have heard people saying how togo leather will soften and start sagging, and epsom leather will start to have buldges (waves) on the retourne while the corners will wear faster on sellier.
Birkin owners, please share your experience and how is the condition of the leather of your bags now?
Thanks.

I’m not easy on my bags but I don’t mind a bag looking well cared for and loved

my heritage leather (box, smooth ebene, noir, and fauve barenia, vache natural, in B30, K28, K32, K longue wallet, picotin, and formerly HAC32 and others) are conditioned and made somewhat weather resistant by @docride or SPAed by H. Patina is evened out to a uniform, lustrous finish. If I get caught in the rain, I just wipe off; no bubbling or craziness. Dry naturally.

Swift- I have great luck with swift In neutral colors. Favorite is gold which is close in color, but not as lustrous as fauve barenia smooth. Durable, takes color beautifully. Slouches more than other leathers in a 30B, but it’s gorgeous slouchy.

togo in recent years, namely B30, looks a bit dry brand new from the boutique, but is not. There is some Slouching which I think looks nice and relaxed, though less than a 35B. Fine in rain, though I would not wear it in a storm.

epsom, in a craie mini Della cavalleria, B25 gold sellier, 25K sellier. Have behaved like champs. Curry and dessert have wiped entirely clean off of the craie top flao, with a bit of water. I spilt an inch of sparkling water ( leaky bottke from H boutique) and walked home, and my B25 didnt leak. and was perfectly fine afterwards. No warping or weirdness. No corner damage. My SA advised drying up side down over a wine bottle. It’s perfect. The color is bright in epsom, no complaints.

clemence in various evelyns, trims, Victorias and other models. A bit heavy, but can weather a snow storm or flood better than nylon, the latter of which gets wilted and flaccid.

fjord - I once had an amazing marron fonce fjord paris bombay but rehomed it. Sturdy, durable, gorgeous veining and thick leather. Buttery soft interior.

evercalf/troika- I bought a troika bolide 31 in Nero, phw, at one of the last private day sample sales to feature bags. Rehomed it prematurely. Some sad specimens on eBay have bald patches, but this seemed very sturdy.

Vache liegee, it’s a pressed leather, now discontinued, used to be sold with a premium. Not sure why. Nothing is wrong with it, and it holds its shape, but not sure what the acclaim was about.

chevre. My experience is different from most. I have a gorgeous metallic silver chèvre clutch. No fading, yellowing, peeling. But I also had a chevre kelly longue wallet which didn’t age well. Softened and was saggy bottomed somehow

Shiny croc. Somewhat delicate. Requires upkeep by h spa or third party professional. I had it professionally burnished matte which I prefer as a younger , more modern look.

ostrich. Very durable, takes color beautifully. I’m still looking for the right H bag in ostrich, but I’ve owned many other brands in this leather. Susceptible to handle darkening and oils.

treated H silk, toile for bags ( silky pop) and felt: strong, as durable, it seems as leather. Can be ckeaned easily. Can withstand some wet conditions. Regret rehoming a 35B toile, but I rarely carry 35s anymore and will replace with a 25 cargo or 30 toile

quadrille. I’m not all that careful, and happily use my K28 quadrille. just not in rain or snow.

Buffalo Dalmatian. Love it, but have a non H bag. Not sure why vintage BD seems to yellow, bc this is much sturdier than ring or ombré lizard ( which has yellowed in my closet while in a dust bag).

one of my dream bags was a black and white vibrato K 28. I had two chances to buy o)e and passed due to high price and poor condition. I wa told that the white and grays cZn easily oxidize, giving a yellow or green tone. Ugh.

doblis. I’ve heard differing reports on doblis suede. Still looking for the perfect bag. Same for Nero dwich

ETA: vintage crinoline tends to fall apart at the seams and not sure it can be repaired

Wow, thank you for sharing!

I am torn between the leathers options. I really like how togo looks brand new when its still stiff but supple at the same time, but i saw some pictures on couple years old birkin 30 where the bottom part is not holding its structure well.

How do you usually carry you epsom B25 sellier? does it feel awkward when carrying it on your forearm?

I’m medium build and it slides easily up and down, but I’m a hand carry kind of person

I also love the upright quality of sellier. So a sellier b25 is perfect
