I'm thinking of purchasing a handbag from a reseller in Japan. I would opt for home delivery because I'm changing jobs and don't know which company I'll be working at when the package arrives in the US. In the US, the major shipping companies allow you to have the package held at a location for in-person pick-up. Does anyone know if EMS gives this option or permits you to change the delivery date to the weekend, since I won't be home when the package initially arrives? Thanks for your help!

Since EMS is delivered by the USPS the mail carrier would make one delivery attempt and leave you a slip to pick up the next day at your local post office.

Another option is to put a Vacation Hold but then all your mail will be held until your specified date for you to come pick up.

Just a heads up.... although I’ve never ordered something Japan, my friend did and she said she got charged with custom from usps. They usually declare full value, and I guess depending on the value, you might or might not get charged. I don’t remember what the percentage is though.... good luck!

Thanks for letting me know!

I buy designer bags priced in the thousands of USD from Japan shipped by EMS and were declared at full value but was only charged duty once in about 8 packages.

The fee was 9% duty plus $4.95 USPS processing charge.

Wow good to know! My friend was indeed unlucky. She bought a vintage kelly for around $6k (If my memory serves me right).
