So, I might be headed to the Caribbean in about a year, a good amount of time for saving up. When I was last there, May of 2010, I got a great price on a Cartier Love Bracelet from the Cartier boutique in St. Thomas.

If we go again, I'd like to pick up another piece, the discounts, and no tax can't be beat.

The two things I'm interested in are either a diamond eternity band or some type of nice watch, probably a Cartier, don't know which one. I'm not a bit watch person in general, but I think if it were a Cartier or Rolex, something swoon worthy, I definitely could be.

I've been wanting a diamond eternity band for awhile, but I'm not sure if the designs down there will be the nicest. I was looking at http://www.shopdi.com/ which is all over the place down there, and didn't see anything too pretty. But I do really love rings.

Any thoughts or advice?

I have a diamond eternity band and don't wear it everyday. I think you would get more use out of a watch. But I'm a watch addict and not really into rings. Can't go wrong with any Cartier or Rolex in my opinion. And the prices increase like crazy so I'd do it sooner rather than later.

Hey LYM!!!

I actually think you can get a fantastic deal down south! A friend of mine purchased her tennis bracelet in St Martin....actually, it belonged to the jewellery store owner's wife!!! When she returned earlier this year, he actually offered to buy it back from her and upgrade to something larger! But she refused as the bracelet is STUNNING!!!

So I would support your decision, just do your homework. Check out top brand name sites like Tiffany, Cartier, DeBeers, Graff, VCA, HW etc for Eternity band styles that you love.

Bottom line, ask for a guarantee, certificate etc......and deal with a reputable store.

Sounds like a lot of fun and something to look forward to!!!!

I would buy a branded piece due to the discounts and lack of taxes. An unbranded piece can always be had for a lower price if you shop around. I remember several years ago someone mentioning getting a good discount on Van Cleef & Arpels vintage Alhambra in the Caribbean and that is unheard of anywhere else. I do not know if that is still the case or if you are even interested in VCA. Regardless of what you end up purchasing, hope you have a great time!

You should go for an eternity band, especially when you are not a watch person.
I have 2 eternity (celebration) rings, and I love them. I can wear them always, and every time I look at them, they put smile on my face, because they spark so beautiful!
I would buy a ring only from an old, trusted jewelery company, not only because of the authentication & guarantee, but IMO the design and workmanship of the setting is much more fine and sophisticated (compared to an unknown one).
Good luck on your decision!

You said you're not necessarily a watch person and have been thinking about the eternity ring for a while. I'd go for the ring. I bought a beautiful circle diamond pendant years ago in St. Thomas - couldn't beat the price!

I guess my vote would be for a nice watch......I know you said you are not a big watch person and maybe you don't necessarily have to go with a Rolex or Cartier but one watch in your jewelry collection could be a good thing. There are so many good watch brands. I personally love watches and wear one everyday - no matter what's on the schedule. As for the eternity, I have one and I do think it is gorgeous but I never wear it. Since you have a good amount of time before your next trip, you can get to some stores and 'play' with both items you're considering......something to look forward to definitely.

I stayed up late last night doing research on buying diamonds in the Caribbean, and... it doesn't sound like a very good idea. Some feel like they got a great deal, but there are more who felt like they were mislead regarding diamond size, quality, etc.

So, if I buy something, it will be something branded. I need to go to Tourneau and try on some watches and see if they call to me. If not, I can probably pull off the first ring in my eventual stack in the next 6 mos!

I voted for the eternity band, If your not a big watch person a cartier may sway you for a while, but a diamond eternity band can always stay on your hand. personally I would want a ring before a watch:D
