Hi,
I'm going to be proposing to my girlfriend in a months time. I have a 3-stone princess ring sorted, I just need to work out which stones I should put in... My options are as follows, they're all around the same cost. I'd like to ask you, what should I go for?

0.70c - D - VS1
1.00c - G - SI1

As it's 3-stone, I guess the middle ring will either be a .35c or .50c. So, will a G and SI1 be nice? will the D-VS1 be wasted on something this size.

Let me know what you prefer! Many thanks, I'm stuck at the moment

If it is a GIA "G" stone than there is no way it will look "warm," it will be very white......if it is an EGL stone or something else besides GIA then you run the risk of it possibly being close to an I or a J in which you WILL see some warmth if you are hyper sensitive to color.

If the G/SI stone is GIA and is eyeclean, go for that one.

Thanks for your comments. I should have said that both of them would be GIA.

I don't really want it to be warm, more white, but the post above by Kristie would indicate that as long as it's GIA (which it is), then a G will be nice and white.

Thanks.

Oh can I add, when you get the certificates, do you get 1 or 3 if it's for a 3-stone ring. Are the two smaller diamonds certified at all? or does all the info appear on the one certificate? and do you automatically get the same colour/clarity as the main stone?

Youll only get 3 certs if all three stones are cert'd. So if only the center stone has certification, you'll only get one. If this is a pre-built ring you will most likely not have certified side stones. But if you go through a vendor like goodoldgold.com or similar, you often get to select all three stones, which gives you the best chance of all 3 being certified.

For a prebuild ring, you don't automatically get same color/clarity in your sides, unless you choose them yourself. And even then, you don't have to go AS high in color/clarity. If you did G SI1 for the center you could maybe do H SI2 even, or H SI1 sides, or similar.

A lot of times, side stones will not have GIA reports.......if they don't, be sure to take them to an independent jewelry appraiser that can assure you that what they are supposed to be is what they are, KWIM?

If they all have GIA reports, that is great and ITA with ame.......going to a GIA H/SI2 can be a great cost saver. Just be POSITIVE the SI2's are eyeclean :D

GL! It sounds like it will be a gorgeous ring!

I am super color sensitive with diamonds, but I was okay with G provided it was a good cut. I ended up with an F but only because that is what they had, I would have done G. When we bought diamonds the diamondteer (sp?) placed the diamonds face down on white paper, that was the only time I could see the color difference from an H or G, D was still obviously whiter. But in a ring you won't be able to tell at all. Also, inclusions are not necessarily bad, a ring can have inclusions and still be "eye clean" and you can get a good deal. But make sure you take a good look at the inclusion with a scope to be sure you are comfortable with them or it will bother you. Check out pricescope.com if you really want to get diamond educated, they know everything about cut.

Thanks all for your comments. I'll have to find out from the shop about the certificates, thanks for the info, at least when I go in the shop I know what to be asking about now in terms of this.

I should say that I'm getting the ring in white gold. Will colour G still be OK in white gold?

I'm also trying to squeeze my budget to allow a VS2 instead of SI1.

A person's eye cannot tell the difference in color when the stone is set and they see it on your girlfriend's hand. I would go for the bigger diamond. Congrats on your upcoming engagement.

A good place to look on line to compare diamonds - their prices and cuts is www.bluenile.com Let us know what you choose!

I would--and did--go for the G SI1. Make sure it is graded AGS 0 or GIA Excellent. You will be wanting the best cut stone you can find. It is the cut that will make the ring sparkle like a disco ball:D
